وفي المثل: " عاط بغير أنواط "، أي يتناول ما لا مطمع فيه ولا متناول
And in the proverb: 'He gives without ties,' meaning he takes what is not desired and not attainable.
ويقال: هو يعطيني بالتشديد ويعاطيني، إذا كان يخدمك
And it is said: He 'yu'ṭṭīnī' (serves) with emphasis and 'yu'āṭīnī' (serves), if he is serving you.
وتعاطاه: تناوله
And 'ta'āṭāhu': he took it.
وفلان يتعاطى كذا، أي يخوض فيه
And so-and-so 'yata'āṭā' (engages in) such-and-such, meaning he delves into it.
وتعاطينا فعطوته، أي غلبته
And we competed, and I 'aṭawtuhu' (overcame) him, meaning I defeated him.
وقيل في قوله تعالى: (فتعاطى فعقر)، أي قام على أطراف أصابع رجليه ثم رفع يديه فضربها
And it was said regarding the Almighty's saying: (So he reached out and slaughtered it), meaning he stood on the tips of his toes, then raised his hands and struck it.
وإذا أردت من زيد أن يعطيك شيئا قلت: هل أنت معطية بياء مفتوحة مشددة
And if you want from Zayd to give you something, you say: 'Hal anta mu'ṭiyah?' with a stressed, open ya'.
وكذلك تقول للجماعة: هل أنتم معطية، لان النون سقطت للاضافة، وقلبت الواو ياء وأدغمت وفتحت ياءك، لان قبلها ساكن
And likewise you say to the group: 'Hal antum mu'ṭiyah?', because the nun fell due to annexation, the waw was turned into a ya', assimilated, and your ya' was opened because it is preceded by a sukun.
وللاثنين: هل أنتما معطيايه بفتح الياء
And for the two: 'Hal antumā mu'ṭiyāyah?' with an open ya'.
وإذا صغرت عطاء حذفت اللام فقلت عطي
And when you make 'ata'' diminutive, you delete the lam and say 'uṭayy'.
وكذلك كل اسم اجتمعت فيه ثلاث ياءات، مثل على وعدى، حذفت منه اللام إذا لم يكن مبنيا على فعل
And likewise every noun in which three ya's are gathered, like 'alī' and 'wa'dī', the lam is deleted from it if it is not built on a verb.
فإن كان مبنيا على فعل ثبتت، نحو محيى من حيا يحيى تحية
But if it is built on a verb, it is retained, like 'muḥyā' from 'ḥayā' yuḥyī' (to greet).
