ثم أبدلوا من إحدى الضمتين كسرة فانقلبت الواو ياءً فقالوا عَتِيًّا

ورجلٌ عاتٍ وقومٌ عُتَى
And a man is 'atin (stubborn) and a people are 'uta (stubborn).
قلبوا الواو ياءً
They inverted the waw into a ya'.
وفُعُولٌ إذا كانت جمعاً فحقُّها القلبُ
And 'ufu'ul when it is a plural, its proper form is inversion.
وإذا كانت مصدراً فحقُّها التصحيحُ
And when it is a masdar, its proper form is to be sound.
لأن الجمع أثقلُ عندهم من الواحدِ
Because the plural is heavier for them than the singular.
وتَعَتَّيْتُ مثلُ عَتَوْتُ
And I became stubborn, like 'atwtu.
وعَتَا الشيخُ يَعْتُو عُتُوًّا وعُتِيًّا: كَبِرَ وَوَلِيَ
And the old man grew old, he grows old with old age and obstinacy: he became old and advanced.
وعَتَى: لغةُ هذيلٍ وثقيفٍ في حَتَى
And 'ata: is a dialect of Hudhayl and Thaqif for 'hatta' (until).
