Al-shajw: grief and sorrow.
وَيُقَالُ: شَجَاهُ يَشْجُوهُ شَجْوًا، إِذَا أَحْزَنَهُ.
And it is said: shajahu yashju-hu shajwan, if it saddened him.
وَأَشْجَاهُ يُشْجِيهِ إِشْجَاءً، إِذَا أَغَصَّهُ.
And ashjahu yushji-hi ishja'an, if it made him choke.
تَقُولُ مِنْهَا جَمِيعًا: شَجَى بِالْكَسْرِ يَشْجَى شَجَى.
You say from all of them: shaji bil-kasri yashja shaja.
فِي حَلْقِكُمْ عَظْمٌ وَقَدْ شَجِينَا
There is a bone in your throats, and indeed we have been grieved/choked.
أَرَادَ: فِي حُلُوقِكُمْ، فَلِهَذَا قَالَ شَجِين.
He intended: in your throats, and for this reason he said 'shajeen'.
وَالشَّجَا: مَا يَنْشَبُ فِي الْحَلْقِ مِنْ عَظْمٍ وَغَيْرِهِ.
And al-shaja: that which lodges in the throat, from a bone or other thing.
وَرَجُلٌ شَجٌّ، أَيْ حَزِينٌ.
And a man is shajj, meaning sad.
وَامْرَأَةٌ شَجِيَّةٌ عَلَى فَعْلَةٍ.
And a woman is shajiyyah, following the pattern 'fa'lah'.
وَيْلٌ لِلشَّجِيِّ مِنَ الْخَلِيِّ.
Woe to the sorrowful one from the carefree one.
نَامَ الْخَلِيُّونَ عَنْ لَيْلِ الشَّجِيِّينَا
The carefree ones slept through the night of the sorrowful ones.
فَإِنْ جَعَلْتَ الشَّجَى فَعِيلًا مِنْ شَجَاهُ الْحُزْنُ فَهُوَ مَشْجُوٌّ وَشَجِيٌّ، فَهُوَ بِالتَّشْدِيدِ لَا غَيْرُ.
And if you make al-shaja a passive participle from 'shajahu al-huznu' (grief grieved him), then he is mashjuww and shajiyy, and it is with doubling (of the 'waw') and nothing else.
وَمَفَازَةٌ شَجْوَاءُ: صَعْبَةُ الْمَسْلَكِ.
And a shajwa' desert: difficult to traverse.
وَالشَّجُوجَى: الرَّجُلُ الطَّوِيلُ الرِّجْلَيْنِ، مِثْلُ الْخَجُوجَى.
And al-shajuju: the man with long legs, like al-khajuju.
وَالنِّسْبَةُ إِلَى شَجٍّ شَجْوَى بِفَتْحِ الْجِيمِ، كَمَا فُتِحَتْ مِيمُ نَمِرٍ، فَانْقَلَبَتِ الْيَاءُ أَلِفًا ثُمَّ قَلَبْتَهَا وَاوًا.
And the nisbah to 'shajj' is 'shajwa' with a fatha on the jīm, just as the mīm of 'namir' was opened, so the ya' turned into an alif, then you turned it into a waw.
