And so-and-so is tending for his father, meaning he is grazing his sheep.

A man 'tur'iyyah' (with kasra) and 'tur'iyyah' (with damma), with the ya' doubled in both, is for one who is skilled in tending camels.
ويقال أيضا: رجل ترعاية في معنى ترعية.
And it is also said: a man 'turāyah' in the meaning of 'tur'iyyah'.
والرعاوى والرعاوى، بفتح الراء وضمها: الإبل التي ترعى حوالي القوم وديارهم ; لأنها الإبل التي يعتمل عليها.
And al-ru'āwā and al-ru'āwā, with fatha and damma on the ra': are the camels that graze around the people and their dwellings; because they are the camels upon which livelihood depends.
قالت امرأة من العرب تعاتب زوجها: تمششتنى حتى إذا ما تركتني * كنضو الرعاوى قلت إنى ذاهب
An Arab woman said, chiding her husband: 'You led me on until when you left me * like the worn-out camels, I said indeed I am going.'
وراعيت الامر: نظرت إلى أين يصير.
And I observed the matter: I looked to see where it would lead.
وراعيته: لاحظته.

وراعيته من مراعاة الحقوق.

From the wild beasts of my pool, observing the hunt, isolated * as if it were a star falling in the sky.
سترعيته الشئ فرعاه.

والراعي: الوالي.
And al-rā'ī: is the ruler.
والرعية: العامة.
And al-ra'iyyah: is the general populace.
يقال: ليس المرعي كالراعي.
It is said: the subject is not like the ruler.
ورعا يرعو، أي كف عن الأمور.
And ra'ā, yar'ū, means to refrain from matters.
يقال: فلان حسن الرعوة (1) والرعوة والرعوى والارعواء.
It is said: So-and-so is good at refraining (al-ru'wah, al-ru'wah, al-ru'wā, and al-ir'iwā').
وقد ارعوى عن القبيح، وتقديره إفعول، ووزنه افعلل.
And he desisted from the ugly/bad thing, its pattern is if'ūl, and its weight is if'alil.
وإنما لم يدغم لسكون الياء.
And it was not assimilated because of the sukun on the ya'.
والاسم الرعيا (2) بالضم والرعوى بالفتح، مثل البقيا والبقوى.
And the noun is al-ru'yā (with damma) and al-ru'wā (with fatha), like al-buqyā and al-buqwā.
وتقول: أرعيت عليه، إذا أبقيت عليه وترحمته (3) .
And you say: I spared him, if you kept him and had mercy on him.
وأرعيت عليه سمعي، أي أصغيت إليه.
And I gave him my hearing, meaning I listened attentively to him.
وقوله تعالى: (راعنا).
And His saying, the Almighty: (Rā'inā).
قال الاخفش: هو فاعلنا من المراعاة على معنى أرعنا سمعك، ولكن الياء ذهبت للامر.
Al-Akhfash said: It is 'fā'ilnā' from al-murā'āh with the meaning of 'listen to us', but the ya' was dropped for the imperative.
ويقال: (راعنا) بالتنوين على إعمال القول فيه، كأنه قال: لا تقولوا حمقا ولا تقولوا هجرا، وهو من الرعونة.
And it is said: (Rā'inā) with tanwin, applying the saying to it, as if it meant: Do not say foolishness and do not say obscenity, and it is from al-ru'ūnah (foolishness).
ورعى الامير رعيته رعاية.
And the prince took care of his subjects with care.
ورعيت الإبل أرعاها رعيا.
And I grazed the camels, I grazed them grazing.
ورعى البعير الكلا.
And the camel grazed on the fodder.
وارتعى مثله.
And it grazed similarly.
ورعيت النجوم: رقبتها.
And I watched the stars: I observed them.
قالت الخنساء: أرعى النجوم وما كلفت رعيتها
Al-Khansā' said: I watch the stars, though I am not tasked with their tending
ابن السكيت: يقال رعيت عليه حرمته رعاية.
Ibn al-Sikkit: It is said, 'I respected his honor with observance.'
وأرعى الله الماشية، أي أنبت لها ما ترعاه.
And God caused the livestock to grow pasture, meaning He made grow for them what they graze on.
كأنها ظبية تعطو إلى فنن * تأكل من طيب والله يرعيها
As if she were a gazelle reaching for a branch * eating from the good, and God causes it (the pasture) to grow for her.
