لاهم لا أدرى وأنت الدارى
O Allah, I do not know, and You are the Knower.
وإنما قالوا: لا أدر بحذف الياء تخفيفا، لكثرة الاستعمال، كما قالوا لم أبل ولم يك.
They only said: 'La adr' by omitting the 'ya' for brevity, due to frequent use, just as they said 'lam abal' and 'lam yak'.
وأدريته، أي أعلمته.
And I informed him, meaning I made him know.
وقرئ: (ولا أدرأ كم به)، والوجه فيه ترك الهمز.
And it was recited: (And I do not know how many are with you), and the preferred reading is to omit the hamza.
ومداراة الناس تهمز. ولا تهمز، وهي المداجاة والملاينة.
And 'mudarah' of people is pronounced with hamza. And 'mudarah' is not pronounced with hamza, and it means placation and gentleness.
الدرية غير مهموز، وهي دابة يستتر بها الصائد فإذا أمكنه رمى.
The 'durriyah' is without hamza, and it is a creature by which the hunter hides himself, and when he can, he shoots.
هو مهموز، لأنها تدرأ نحو الصيد، أي تدفع.
It is pronounced with hamza, because it repels towards the prey, meaning it pushes.
فإن كنت قد أقصدتني إذ رميتني * بسهمك فالرامي يصيد ولا يدري أي لا يستتر ولا يختل.
If you intended me when you shot your arrow at me, then the shooter hunts and does not conceal himself, meaning he does not hide and does not ambush.
فإن كنت لا أدري الظباء فإنني * أدس لها تحت التراب الداوهيا
If I do not know the gazelles, then I am hiding for them under the dirt the traps.
المدرى: القرن.
The 'midra': the horn.
شك الفريضة بالمدرى فأنفذها * شك المبيطر إذ يشفى من العضد
It pierced the joint with the horn and penetrated it, like the piercing of a veterinarian when he treats the arm.
وكذلك المدراة وربما تصلح بها الماشطة قرون النساء، وهى شئ كالمسلة تكون معها.
And likewise the 'midraah', and sometimes the hairdresser uses it to arrange women's hair, and it is something like a hairpin that is with her.
تهلك المدراة في أكنافه * وإذا ما أرسلته يعتفر
The hairpin gets lost in its surroundings, and when you let it go, it digs.
ويقال: تدرت المرأة، أي سرحت شعرها.
And it is said: 'The woman 'tadarrat', meaning she combed her hair.
إن بني فلان ادروا مكانا، كأنهم اعتمدوه بالغزو والغارة.
The people of so-and-so 'adraw' a place, as if they relied on it for invasion and raid.
وادراه بمعنى، أي ختله، تفعل وافتعل بمعنى.
And 'adraahu' means the same, meaning he tricked him, 'tafa'ala' and 'ifti'ala' have the same meaning.
وماذا تدرى (1) الشعراء منى * وقد جاوزت رأس الاربعين
And what do the poets know of me, when I have passed forty years?
ألا ترى إلى قوله: أخو خمسين مجتمع أشدى * ونجذنى مداورة الشئون
Do you not see his saying: He is fifty, gathering his strength, and the turning of affairs has cut me off?
كيف تراني أذرى وأدرى * غرات جمل وتدرى غررى
How do you see me scattering [dust] and deceiving [this woman] regarding the vulnerabilities of a camel and deceiving my vulnerabilities?
فالاول إنما هو بالذال معجمة، وهو أفتعل من ذريت تراب المعدن.
The first is with the voiced 'dhal', and it is 'ifti'ala' from 'dharraytu' the mine's dust.
والثانى بدال غير معجمة، وهو أفتعل من ادراه أي ختله.
And the second is with the unvoiced 'dal', and it is 'ifti'ala' from 'adraahu' meaning he tricked him.
والثالث تتفعل من تدراه أي ختله، فأسقط إحدى التاءين.
And the third is 'tatafa'ala' from 'tadraahu' meaning he tricked him, so one of the 'ta's was dropped.
جاب المدرى، أي غليظ القرن، يدل بذلك على صغر سن الغزال ; لأن قرنه في أول ما يطلع يغلظ، ثم يدق بعد ذلك إذا طال.
He has a thick horn, meaning the horn is thick, indicating the young age of the gazelle; because its horn thickens when it first appears, then thins later when it grows long.
