وحماة المرأة: أم زوجها، لا لغة فيها غير هذه.
And the 'hamāh' of a woman is her husband's mother; there is no other pronunciation for it.
وكل شئ من قبل الزوج مثل الاب والاخ فهم الأحماء، واحدهم حما.
And everything from the husband's side, like the father and brother, they are the 'aḥmā'' (in-laws), and their singular is 'ḥamw'.
قلت لبواب لديه دارها * تئذن فإنى حمؤها وجارها
I said to the doorkeeper who had her house: 'Announce me, for I am her father-in-law and her neighbor.'
والصهر يجمع هذا كله.
And 'al-ṣihr' encompasses all of this.
والحماة: عضلة الساق.
And 'al-ḥamāh' is the muscle of the calf.
والحامي: الفحل من الإبل الذي طال مكثه عندهم.
And 'al-ḥāmī' is the stud camel that has stayed with them for a long time.
إذا لقح ولد ولده فقد حمى ظهره، فلا يركب ولا يجز له وبر ولا يمنع من مرعى.

وحمة العقرب: سمها وضرها، وأصله حمو أو حمي، والهاء عوض.
And the 'ḥammat' of a scorpion is its venom and harm, and its origin is 'ḥamw' or 'ḥamy', and the 'hā'' is a substitute.
وأما حمة الحر، وهي معظمه، فبالتشديد.
And as for the 'ḥammat' of intense heat, which is its peak, it is with a shaddah.
وحميت المريض الطعام حمية وحموة.
And I forbade the sick person food with abstinence and a period of abstinence.
واحميت من الطعام احتماء.
And I abstained from food with abstention.
فإنما أخرجه على الاصل، وهى لغة لبعض العرب.
He only brought it out according to the root form, and it is a dialect of some Arabs.
وحميت عن كذا حمية بالتشديد ومحمية، إذا أنفت منه وداخلك عار وأنفة أن تفعله.
And I felt shame and pride regarding such-and-such with intensified 'ḥamiyyah' and 'maḥmiyyah', if you felt aversion to it and shame and pride prevented you from doing it.
يقال: فلان أحمى أنفا وأمنع ذمارا من فلان.
It is said: 'So-and-so is more proud of his nose and more protective of his honor than so-and-so.'
وحاميت عنه محاماة وحماء.
And I defended him with defense and protection.
يقال: الضروس تحامي عن ولدها.
It is said: 'The fierce female animal defends her young.'
وحاميت على ضيفي، إذا احتفلت له.
And I took great care of my guest, if I made preparations for him.
حاموا على أضيافهم فشووا لهم * من لحم منقية ومن أكباد
They took great care of their guests, so they roasted for them * from the meat of their best camels and from livers.
وحمى النهار بالكسر، وحمي التنور، حميا فيهما، أي اشتد حره.
And 'ḥimā' al-nahār' (with kasr), and 'ḥamī al-tannūr', both with 'ḥimā'', means its heat intensified.
اشتدا حمي الشمس وحموها بمعنى.
The heat of the sun and its intensity intensified, meaning the same.
وحميت عليه بالكسر: غضبت.
And I became angry with him (with kasr): I got angry.
ويقال: حماء لك بالمد، في معنى فداء لك.
And it is said: 'Ḥamā' lak' (with madd), meaning 'May I be sacrificed for you.'
وأحميت الحديد في النار فهو محمى، ولا يقال حميته.
And I heated the iron in the fire, so it is 'maḥmī', and it is not said 'ḥamaytuhu'.
وتحاماه الناس، أي توقوه واجتنبوه.
And people avoided it, meaning they were wary of it and shunned it.
