Al-hiqwah: pain of the abdomen.
You say of it, 'The man had abdominal pain, so he is one afflicted with it.'
And the hiqwu of an arrow: its pointed end from its rear, near the fletching.
And al-hiqwu: the loincloth, and three ahqwu. Its origin is 'ahquw' on the pattern 'af'al', so it was deleted because there is no noun ending in a weak letter preceded by a dammah. When a pattern leads to that, it is rejected, and the dammah is replaced by a kasrah, so its end becomes a yaa' with the preceding letter in kasrah. When it becomes like that, it is like 'al-qadi' and 'al-ghazi' in the dropping of the yaa' due to the meeting of two silent letters.
And the common plural is hiqaa, and it is on the pattern 'fuhool'. The first waw was changed to a yaa' to be assimilated into the one after it.
And al-hiqwu also: the waist and the tie of the loincloth.
