اثنان من عدد المذكر واثنتان للمؤنث

وفي المؤنث لغة أخرى: ثنتان بحذف الالف.
And in the feminine, there is another dialect: 'thintan' with the deletion of the alif.

كأن خصييه من التدلدل * ظرف عجوز فيه ثنتا حنظل
As if his testicles from dangling * were the container of an old woman with two colocynths in it.
فأراد أن يقول: فيه حنظلتان فلم يمكنه، فأخرج الاثنين مخرج سائر الاعداد للضرورة، وأضافه إلى ما بعده، وأراد ثنتان من حنظل، كما يقال ثلاثة دراهم وأربعة دراهم.
So he wanted to say: 'there are two colocynths in it' but he could not, so he made 'al-ithnayn' follow the pattern of other numbers out of necessity, and added it to what follows, meaning 'two colocynths', as one says 'three dirhams' and 'four dirhams'.
وكان حقه في الاصل أن يقال اثنا دراهم واثنتا نسوة، إلا أنهم اقتصروا بقولهم درهمان وامرأتان عن إضافتهما إلى ما بعدهما.
And its proper form originally would be 'ithna dirhams' and 'ithnata nisaa', except that they sufficed with their saying 'dirhamaan' and 'imra'ataan' without adding them to what follows.

And the entire Quran is also called 'Mathani' due to the pairing of a verse of mercy with a verse of punishment.
