And 'al-fawh' is the origin of our saying 'fam', because the plural is 'afwah'. However, they found it difficult to have two 'h's together in your saying: 'hadha fawwuhu' when added, so they deleted the 'h' from it and said: 'hadha faw' and 'fu Zayd', and 'ra'aytu fa Zayd', and 'marartu bi fi Zayd'.
وإذا أضفته إلى نفسك قلت: هذا في، يستوي فيه حال الرفع والنصب والخفض، لأن الواو تقلب ياء فتدغم.
And when you add it to yourself, you say: 'hadha fi', which is the same in the nominative, accusative, and genitive cases, because the 'waw' turns into a 'ya' and is assimilated.
قال العجاج: خالط من سلمى خياشيم وفا * صهباء خرطوما عقارا قرقفا
Al-'Ajjaj said: 'Mixed with Salma were her nostrils and her mouth * a reddish-brown, a trunk, a potion, a potent drink.'
وقولهم: كلمته فاه إلى في، أي مشافها، ونصب فوه على الحال.
And their saying: 'I spoke to him 'fahan ila fi', meaning face-to-face, and 'faw' is in the accusative case as a حال (circumstantial adverb).
وإذا أفردوا لم تحتمل الواو التنوين فحذفوها وعوضوا من الهاء ميما فقالوا هذا فم وفمان وفموان.
And when they used it alone, the 'waw' could not take tanwin, so they deleted it and replaced the 'h' with a 'mim', and said 'hadha fam', 'famani', and 'famawani'.
قال أبو عبيد: وأصله أنه يريد: جعل الله لفيك الارض، كما يقال: بفيك الحجر، وبفيك الاثلب.
Abu Ubayd said: 'And its origin is that it means: May God make the earth fill your mouth, as it is said: 'bi-fika al-hajar' (may a stone fill your mouth), and 'bi-fika al-athlab' (may a thorny branch fill your mouth).'
والفوه بالتحريك: سعة الفم.
And 'al-fawh' (with vowel marks) means: the width of the mouth.
