The tongue: the organ of speech, and it can be used metaphorically for a word, in which case it is treated as feminine.
إنى أتتني لسان لا أسر بها * من علو لا عجب منها ولا سخر
Indeed, a word came to me that I do not rejoice in, from above, not to be wondered at or mocked.
فمن ذكره قال في الجمع ثلاثة ألسنة، مثل حمار وأحمرة
And whoever uses it (al-lisān) in the masculine form says for the plural 'three tongues', like 'himār' and 'aḥmirah'.
ومن أنثه قال ثلاث ألسن، مثل ذراع وأذرع، لان ذلك قياس ما جاء على فعال من المذكر والمؤنث.
And whoever uses it in the feminine form says 'three tongues', like 'dhirāʿ' and 'adhruʿ', because that is the pattern for what comes on the 'faʿāl' measure for masculine and feminine.
واللسن بالتحريك: الفصاحة.
And 'al-lasn' with vowelization is eloquence.
وقد لسن بالكسر فهو لسن وألسن، وقوم لسن.
And he became eloquent (lasina) with a kasra, so he is eloquent (lasin) and very eloquent (alsan), and a people are eloquent (lasin).
وفلان لسان القو م، إذا كان المتكلم عنهم.
And so-and-so is the tongue of the people, if he is the one speaking for them.
واللسان: لسان الميزان.
And 'al-lisān': the tongue of the balance scale.
ولسنته، إذا أخذته بلسانك.
And I took hold of it with my tongue (lasintuhu), if I grasped it with my tongue.
وإذا تلسنني ألسنها * إنني لست بموهون
And if her tongues grasp me, I am not weak.
والملسون: الكذاب.
And 'al-malsūn': the liar.
واللسن، بكسر اللام: اللغة.
And 'al-lasn', with a kasra on the lam: the language.
يقال: لكل قوم لسن، أي لغة يتكلمون بها.
It is said: for every people there is a language, meaning a language they speak.
والملسن من النعال: الذي فيه طول ولطافة، على هيئة اللسان.
And 'al-milsan' of sandals: that which has length and slenderness, in the shape of a tongue.
لهم أزر حمر الحواشي يطونها * بأقدامهم في الحضرمي الملسن
They have red-bordered cloaks that they fold with their feet in the long and slender Hadrami sandal.
وكذلك امرأة ملسنة القدمين.
And likewise a woman with long and slender feet.
