Jamil said: Bathaynah, be steadfast; if I cling to you, despite the abundance of slanderers, what assistance [can I offer]?
يقول: نعم العون قولك (لا) في رد الوشاة وإن كثروا.
He means: Your saying 'no' in repelling slanderers, even if they are many, is indeed good assistance.
وتقول: ما أخلانى فلان من معاونه، وهو جمع معونة.
And you say: So-and-so has spared me from his assistance, and it is a plural of ma'ūnah.
ورجل معوان: كثير المعونة للناس.
And a man is ma'wān: very helpful to people.
واستعنت بفلان فأعانني وعاونني.
And I sought help from so-and-so, and he helped me and assisted me.
وفي الدعاء: " رب أعني ولا تعن علي ".
And in the supplication: 'My Lord, help me and do not help against me.'
وتعاون القوم، إذا أعان بعضهم بعضا.
And the people cooperated, when some of them helped each other.
واعتونوا مثله، وإنما صحت الواو لصحتها في تعاونوا ; لان معناهما واحد فبن عليه، ولولا ذلك لاعتلت.
