It is said: 'He agreed with him in agreement and harmony, if he did as he does.'
لولا الوئام لهلك الانام
Were it not for harmony, mankind would perish.
أي لولا موافقة الناس بعضهم بعضا في الصحبة والعشرة لكانت الهلكة.
Meaning, were it not for people's agreement with each other in companionship and social life, there would be destruction.
لولا الوئام هلك اللئام
Were it not for harmony, the base people would perish.
والوئام: المباهاة.
And al-wi'ām: boasting.
أي إن الرجال ليسوا يأتون الجميل من الأمور على أنها أخلاقهم، وإنما يفعلونها مباهاة وتشبها بأهل الكرم، ولولا ذلك لهلكوا.
Meaning, men do not perform good deeds because they are their nature, but rather they do them out of ostentation and imitation of the generous, and were it not for that, they would perish.
وثم: الدق والكسر.

وقولهم: لا والذي أخرج النار من الوثيمة، أي من الصخرة.
And their saying: 'No, by Him who brought forth fire from al-wathīmah,' meaning from the rock.
والوثيم: المكتنز لحما.
And al-wathīm: one who is corpulent with flesh.
وقد وثم بالضم وثامة.
And he became corpulent with flesh, with 'wathāmah'.
