إنما سمي بذلك لأنه كان لا يسمع فيه صوت مستغيث، ولا حركة قتال، ولا قعقعة سلاح، لأنه من الأشهر الحرم.
It was only named so because no sound of a petitioner was heard in it, nor the movement of fighting, nor the clatter of weapons, because it is one of the sacred months.
ويقال للداهية: صمى صمام، مثال قطام، وهي الداهية، أي زيدي.
And for a calamity, it is said: 'ṣamā ṣammām,' like 'qaṭṭām,' meaning the calamity, i.e., be firm.
ويقولون: " صمي ابنة الجبل ".
And they say: 'ṣammī, daughter of the mountain.'
ويقال: صمام صمام، أي تصاموا في السكوت.
And it is said: 'ṣammām ṣammām,' meaning they feigned deafness in silence.
وصمه بالعصا، أي ضربه بها.
And 'he struck him with the stick,' meaning he hit him with it.
وصمه بحجر.
And he struck him with a stone.
وصم صداه، أي هلك.
And his echo perished, meaning he was destroyed.
واشتمال الصماء: أن تجلل جسدك بثوبك، نحو شملة الأعراب بأكسيتهم، وهو أن يرد الكساء من قبل يمينه على يده اليسرى وعاتقه الأيسر، ثم يرده ثانية من خلفه على يده اليمنى وعاتقه الأيمن، فيغطيهما جميعا.
And 'ishmilāl al-ṣammā': is to cover your body with your garment, like the Arabs' cloak with their outer garments, which is to wrap the garment from your right side over your left hand and left shoulder, then wrap it again from behind over your right hand and right shoulder, covering both.
هو أن يشتمل بثوب واحد ليس عليه غيره ثم يرفعه من أحد جانبيه فيضعه على منكبه فيبدو منه فرجة.
It is to wrap oneself in a single garment with nothing else on, then lift it from one side and place it on the shoulder, revealing an opening.
فإذا قلت: اشتمل فلان الصماء كأنك قلت. اشتمل الشملة التي تعرف بهذا الاسم، لان الصماء ضرب من الاشتمال.
And when you say: 'So-and-so wrapped himself in al-ṣammā', it is as if you said: he wrapped himself in the cloak known by this name, because al-ṣammā' is a type of wrapping.
والصم بالكسر: اسم من أسماء الأسد والداهية.
And 'al-ṣamm' (with kasra): is a name for the lion and the calamity.
والصمة: الرجل الشجاع، والذكر من الحيات، وجمعه صمم.
And 'al-ṣammah': is the brave man, and the male of snakes, and its plural is 'ṣamam'.
وقول جرير: سعرت (1) عليك الحرب تغلى قدورها فهلا غداة الصمتين تديمها
And the saying of Jarir: I ignited the war against you, its pots boiling, why then on the day of the two 'ṣammān' did you not sustain it?
أراد الصمة أبا دريد، وعمه مالكا:
He meant al-Ṣammah, Abu Durayd, and his uncle Malik:
وصميم الشئ: خالصه.
And the core of a thing: its essence.
يقال: هو في صميم قومه.
It is said: He is from the core of his people.
وصميم الحر وصميم البرد: أشده.
And the peak of heat and the peak of cold: their most intense.
قال خفاف بن ندبة: وإن تك خيلي قد أصيب صميمها فعمدا على عين تيممت مالكا
Khaffaf ibn Nadbah said: And if my horses have had their core struck, then deliberately, with intent, I aimed for Malik.
وكان صميم خيله يومئذ معاوية أخو خنساء، قتله دريد وهاشم ابنا حرملة المريان.
And the core of his horses that day was Mu'awiyah, the brother of Khansa', whom Durayd and Hashim, the sons of Harmalah al-Murri, killed.
والصماء من الارض: الغليظة.
And 'al-ṣammā'' from the earth: the hard, dense ground.
والصمان: موضع إلى جنب رمل عالج.
And al-Ṣammān: a place next to the sands of 'Alij.
والصمصام والصمصامة: السيف الصارم الذي لا ينثنى.
And al-ṣamṣām and al-ṣamṣāmah: the sharp sword that does not bend.
والصمصام: اسم سيف عمرو بن معد يكرب.
And al-Ṣamṣām: the name of the sword of 'Amr ibn Ma'd Yakrib.
وصمم في السير وغيره، أي مضى.
And he proceeded in walking and other things, meaning he moved forward.
قال حميد: وحصحص في صم الصفا ثفناته وناء بسلمى نوأة ثم صمما
Humayd said: And he settled on the hard rocks, his knees, and he moved with Salma, a camel's load, then proceeded.
وصمم، أي عض ونيب فلم يرسل ما عض.
And he bit, meaning he gnawed and bit without releasing what he bit.
وصمم السيف، إذا مضى في العظم وقطعه.
And the sword cut, when it went into the bone and severed it.
فأما إذا أصاب المفصل وقطعه يقال طبق.
But if it struck the joint and severed it, it is said to have 'ṭabaqa'.
قال الشاعر يصف سيفا: يصمم أحيانا وحينا يطبق
The poet said, describing a sword: It cuts through sometimes, and sometimes it severs.
وأصمه الله سبحانه فصم.
And God Almighty made him deaf, so he became deaf.
وأصم أيضا بمعنى صم.
And 'aṣamma' also means 'ṣamma'.
قال الكميت: تسائل ما أصم عن السؤال
Al-Kumait said: You ask what deafens from the question
يقول: تسائل شيئا قد صم عن السؤال.
He means: You ask about something that has become deaf to the question.
وأصممته: وجدته أصم.
And 'I found him deaf': I discovered him to be deaf.
وتصام: أرى من نفسه أنه أصم وليس به.
And 'he pretended to be deaf': he acted as if he were deaf, though he was not.
ورجل صمصم بالكسر، أي غليظ، ويقال هو الجرئ الماضي.
And a man 'ṣamṣam' (with kasra), meaning hardy, and it is said he is the bold, forward-moving one.
وقولهم: " صمت حصاة بدرم " أي إن الدماء كثرت حتى لو ألقيت حصاة لم يسمع لها وقع، لأنها لا تقع على الأرض.
And their saying: 'The falling of a pebble is unheard,' means that the blood was so abundant that if a pebble were thrown, its fall would not be heard, because it would not land on the ground.
وهذا المعنى أراد امرؤ القيس بقوله: صمي ابنة الجبل
And this is the meaning Imru' al-Qays intended with his saying: 'ṣammī, daughter of the mountain'.
ويقال أراد الصدى.
And it is said he meant the echo.
