The measure of 'taw'am' is 'faw'al', and its origin is 'waw'am'. So one of the 'waw's was replaced by a 'ta', just as they said 'tulij' from 'walaj'.

And she wove a 'mutā'amah' (double weaving) using the pattern 'mufā'alah', if she wove it with two threads for every two threads.
وأتأمها، أي أفضاها.
And 'atāmahā', meaning to penetrate it.
وكنت كليلة الشيباء همت بمنع الشكر أتأمها القبيل
