And in the hadith: 'When the righteous are mentioned, then hayyil 'amra', with a fatha on the lam like fifteen, and its meaning is 'Upon you is 'Amr, and call 'Amr', meaning he is of the people of this quality.

وأما قول لبيد يذكر صاحبا له كان أمره بالرحيل في السفر: يتمارى في الذى قلت له ولقد يسمع قولى حيهل فإنما سكنه للقافية.

And as for the saying of Labid, mentioning a companion of his who was ordered to depart on a journey: 'He hesitates about what I told him, and indeed he hears my saying hayyal', he only silenced it for the rhyme.

من ذلك قولهم في الاذان: " حى على الصلاة حى على الفلاح "، وإنما هو دعاء إلى الصلاة والفلاح.

Among that is their saying in the call to prayer: 'Hayya 'ala as-salat, Hayya 'ala al-falah', and it is indeed a call to prayer and success.

أنشأت أسأله ما بال رفقته حى الحمول فإن الركب قد ذهبا

I began asking him about his companions: 'Hayya al-humool, for the caravan has gone'.

قال سيبويه عن أبى الخطاب أن بعض العرب يقول: حيهل الصلاة، يصل بهل كما يصل بعلى، فيقال: حيهل الصلاة، ومعناه ائتوا الصلاة واقربوا من الصلاة، وهلموا إلى الصلاة.

Sibawayh said from Abu Al-Khattab that some Arabs say: 'Hayhil as-salat', they connect it with 'bahla' as they connect with 'ala', so it is said: 'Hayhil as-salat', and its meaning is 'Come to the prayer, and come near to the prayer, and hasten to the prayer'.

وقد حيعل المؤذن، كما يقال حولق وتعبشهم، مركبا من كلمتين.

And the muezzin has haayaala, as one says hawlaqa and ta'abashama, compounded from two words.

The desire was a phantom from you spending the night embracing me until the caller of the morning called and haayaala.

أقول لها ودمع العين جار ألم يحزنك حيعله المنادى

I say to her while tears flow from the eye: 'Does not the call of the announcer sadden you?'

وربما ألحقوا به الكاف فقالوا: حيهلك، كما قالوا رويدك والكاف للخطاب فقط، ولا موضع لها من الإعراب، لانها ليست باسم.

And sometimes they attach the kaf to it and say: 'Hayyalak', as they say 'Ruwaydak', and the kaf is only for address, and has no grammatical position, because it is not a noun.

فقال: ما يقول؟ قلنا: يقول عجل. فقال: ألا يقول حيهلك، أي هلم وتعال.

So he said: 'What is he saying?' We said: 'He is saying 'Hasten'.' He said: 'Why doesn't he say 'Hayyalak', meaning 'Come and approach'.
