And 'al-awwal' is the opposite of 'al-akhir', and its origin is 'aw'al' on the pattern of 'af'al' with a hamza in the middle, the hamza was changed to a waw and assimilated, indicated by their saying: 'This is first from you'.

And you say: 'I have not seen him since last year', and 'since last year'. So whoever raises 'al-awwal' makes it an adjective for 'year' as if he said: 'first from our year', and whoever makes it accusative treats it like an adverbial, as if he said: 'since a year before our year'.
وإذا قلت ابدأ بهذا أول، ضممته على الغاية، كقولك فعلته قبل.
And if you say: 'Start with this first', you make it nominative as a limit, like your saying: 'I did it before'.
وإن أظهرت المحذوف نصبت فقلت: ابدأ به أول فعلك، كما تقول قبل فعلك.
And if you make the omitted part explicit, you make it accusative, saying: 'Start with it first of your action', as you say: 'before your action'.
وتقول: ما رأيته مذ أمس، فإن لم تره يوما قبل أمس قلت: ما رأيته مذ أول من أمس، فإن لم تره مذ يومين قبل أمس قلت: ما رأيته مذ أول من أول من أمس، ولم تجاوز ذلك.
And you say: 'I have not seen him since yesterday'. If you did not see him the day before yesterday, you say: 'I have not seen him since the day before yesterday'. If you have not seen him for two days before yesterday, you say: 'I have not seen him since the day before the day before yesterday', and you do not go beyond that.
وتقول: هذا أول بين الأولية.
And you say: 'This is the first among the primacy'.
ماح البلاد لنا في أوليتنا على حسود الأعادي مائح قثم
The water-carrier of the lands for us in our primacy against the envious enemies, a dark-faced water-carrier.
وما فخر من ليست له أولية تعد إذا عد القديم ولا ذكر
And he does not boast of one who has no precedence that is counted when the ancient is counted, nor any mention.
وتقول في المؤنث، هي الأولى، والجمع الأول مثل أخرى وأخر.
And you say for the feminine: 'She is the first', and the plural is 'al-awwal' like 'ukhra' and 'akhar'.
وكذلك الجماعة الرجال من حيث التأنيث.
And likewise the group of men, in terms of femininity.
عود على عود لأقوام أول يعنى ناقة مسنة على طريق قديم.
A worn-out she-camel for people of old, meaning an old she-camel on an old path.
وإن شئت قلت الاولون.
