والعالة: شبه الظلة يستتر بها من المطر، مخففة اللام
And 'al-'alah: is like a canopy behind which one shelters from the rain, with a lightened 'lam'.

So stabbing is a rustling sound and striking is a thudding sound, striking the arm with a pickaxe under the rain cloud.
وعال عياله يعولهم عولا وعيالة، أي قاتهم وأنفق عليهم
And he provided for his dependents, supporting them with sustenance and spending on them, meaning he fed them and spent on them.
يقال: علته شهرا، إذا كفيته معاشه
It is said: I supported him for a month, if you sufficed him in his livelihood.
كما خامرت في حضنها أم عامر لذي الحبل حتى عال أوس عيالها
As if the hyena in its embrace had a cub for the one with the rope until 'Awas supported its young.
وعال الميزان فهو عائل، أي مائل

قالوا اتبعنا (1) رسول الله واطرحوا قول الرسول وعالوا في الموازين
They said: we followed the Messenger of God, and they discarded the Messenger's saying and tilted in the scales.

With a scale of truth that does not cheat an atom, it has a witness from itself that is not tilting.
ذلك أدنى ألا تعولوا

Mujahid said: do not lean and do not be unjust.
ويقال: عال في الحكم، أي جار ومال
And it is said: he deviated in judgment, meaning he was unjust and inclined.
وعالني الشئ: أي غلبنى وثقل على
And something overwhelmed me: meaning it defeated me and became heavy upon me.
وعال الأمر، أي اشتد وتفاقم
And the matter became severe, meaning it intensified and worsened.
وعيل صبري، أي غلب
And my patience was overcome, meaning it was defeated.

وعول الفريضة. وقد عالت، أي ارتفعت، وهو أن تزيد سهاما فيدخل النقصان على أهل الفرائض

فإذا دخلت سمعت فيها رنة لغط المعاول في بيوت هداد
So when you enter, you hear in it the clamor of pickaxes in the houses of Hidad.
