And 'al-'alil: the second drink.
يقال: علل بعد نهل.
It is said: 'He drank a second time after a large gulp.'
وعله يعله ويعله، إذا سقاه السقية الثانية.
And he gave him to drink ('allahu), if he gave him the second drink.
وأعل القوم: شربت إبلهم العلل.
And the people ('a''ala al-qawm): their camels drank the second drink.
والتعليل: سقي بعد سقي، وجني الثمرة مرة بعد أخرى.
And 'at-ta'līl: watering after watering, and picking fruit once after another.
عل الضارب المضروب، إذا تابع عليه الضرب.
The striker ('alla) hit the struck, if he continued striking him.
وفي المثل: " عرض علي سوم عالة "، أي لم يبالغ، لأن العالة لا يعرض عليها الشرب عرضا يبالغ فيه كالعرض على الناهلة.
And in the proverb: 'He offered me a weak bargain ('ālatin)', meaning he did not exert himself, because the weak one is not offered a drink with great effort like the one who is thirsty.
وأعللت الإبل، إذا أصدرتها قبل ريها.
And I watered the camels ('a''laltu al-ibil), if I sent them away before they were fully quenched.
والعلة: المرض، وحدث يشغل صاحبه عن وجهه، كأن تلك العلة صارت شغلا ثانيا منعه شغله الأول.
And 'al-'illah: illness, and an event that occupies its owner from his purpose, as if that preoccupation became a second occupation preventing his first.
واعتل، أي مرض، فهو عليل.
And he became ill ('a'talla), meaning he got sick, so he is sick ('alīl).
ولا أعلك الله، أي لا أصابك بعلة.
And may God not make you sick ('allaka), meaning may He not afflict you with an illness.
واعتل عليه بعلة واعتله، إذا اعتاقه عن أمر.
And he hindered him ('atalla 'alayhi bi-'illatin) and deceived him ('atallahu), if he prevented him from a matter.
واعتله: تجنى عليه.
And he deceived him ('atallahu): he acted unjustly towards him.
وقولهم: على علاته، أي على كل حال.
And their saying: 'on 'alātih', meaning in any case.
وإن ضربت على العلات أجت أجيج الهقل من خيط النعام
And if you strike on 'alātih, it will produce the roaring of the camel from the ostrich's thread.
إن البخيل ملوم حيث كان ولكن الجواد على علاته هرم
Indeed, the miser is blamed wherever he is, but the generous man, despite his circumstances ('alātih), is esteemed.
وعلله بالشئ، أي لهاه به كما يعلل الصبى بشئ من الطعام يتجزأ به عن اللبن.
And he entertained him with something ('allalahu bish-shay'), meaning he amused him with it, just as a child is amused with some food that distracts him from milk.
يقال: فلان يعلل نفسه بتعلة.
It is said: 'So-and-so entertains himself ('uyallilu) with a distraction.'
وتعلل به، أي تلهى به وتجزأ.
And he amused himself with it (ta'allala bihi), meaning he played with it and was distracted.
عل الشئ فهو معلول.
The thing was entertained ('ulla) and it is entertained (ma'lūl).
والمعلل: يوم من أيام العجوز، لأنه يعلل الناس بشئ من تخفيف البرد.
And 'al-Mu'allal: a day of the old woman, because it entertains ('u'allilu) people with some lessening of the cold.
والعلالة بالضم: ما تعللت به.
And 'al-'alālah (with dammah): that with which you entertain yourself.
والعلالة: بقية اللبن، والحلبة بين الحلبتين، وبقية جري الفرس، وبقية كل شئ.
And 'al-'alālah: the remainder of the milk, and the milking between two milkings, and the remaining run of a horse, and the remainder of everything.
يقال تعاللت الناقة، إذا استخرجت ما عندها من السير.
It is said the she-camel exerted herself fully (ta'allalat), if she expended all her remaining running capacity.
وقد تعاللت ذميل العنس:
And the swiftness of the she-goat has exerted itself fully (ta'allalat):
والعلية بالكسر: الغرفة، والجمع العلالى، وقد ذكرناه في المعتل.
And 'al-'illiyyah (with kasrah): the upper room, and the plural is 'al-'alāliy, and we have mentioned it under 'al-mu'tall.
عل ولعل لغتان بمعنى.
'All' and 'la'alla are two variants with the same meaning.
يقال: علك تفعل وعلي أفعل ولعلي أفعل.
It is said: 'Allaka taf'al' (perhaps you do) and 'allay af'al' (perhaps I do) and 'la'allay af'al' (perhaps I do).
وأنشد أبو زيد لحاتم: أريني جوادا مات هزلا لعلني أرى ms1224 ما ترين أو بخيلا مخلدا
And Abu Zayd recited for Hatim: 'Show me a generous man who died of leanness, perhaps (la'allani) I may see what you see, or an immortal miser.'
وهو حرف مثل إن وليت وكأن ولكن، إلا أنها تعمل عمل الفعل لشبههن به، فتنصب الاسم وترفع الخبر، كما تعمل كان وأخواتها من الافعال.
And it is a particle like 'inna' and 'ka'anna' and 'lakinna', except that it acts like a verb due to their similarity to it, so it makes the noun accusative and the predicate nominative, just as 'kana' and its sisters among the verbs do.
وبعضهم يخفض ما بعدها فيقول لعل زيد قائم، وعل زيد قائم.
And some of them make what follows it genitive, saying 'la'alla Zaydun qā'imun' and 'alla Zaydun qā'imun'.
سمعه أبو زيد من بنى عقيل.
Abu Zayd heard this from the Banu 'Uqayl.
والعلعل بالضم (2) : الرهابة التى تشرف على البطن من العظم كأنه لسان.
And 'al-'al'al (with dammah) (2): the prominence that overlooks the abdomen from the bone, as if it were a tongue.
والعلعل: الذكر من القنابر.
And 'al-'al'al: the male of the locusts.
والعلعل: عضو الرجل إذا أنعظ.
And 'al-'al'al: the male organ of a man when erect.
واليعاليل: سحائب بعضها فوق بعض، الواحد يعلول.
And 'al-ya'ālīl: clouds piled one above another, the singular is 'ya'lūl.
قال الكميت: كأن جمانا واهي السلك فوقه كما انهل من بيض يعاليل تسكب
Al-Kumait said: 'As if pearls with a weak string above them, as if poured from layered clouds (ya'ālīl) of eggs.'
ويقال: اليعاليل نفاخات تكون فوق الماء.
And it is said: 'Al-ya'ālīl are bubbles that form on water.'
