And the origin is ḥibālā with a kasra on the lam, because every plural whose third letter is an alif has the letter after it broken, like masājid and ja'āfir.

ثم أبدلوا من الياء المنقلبة من ألف التأنيث ألفا فقالوا: حبالى بفتح اللام، ليفرقوا بين الالفين

Then they substituted an alif for the ya' that was inverted from the feminine alif, so they said: ḥibālā with a fatha on the lam, to distinguish between the two alifs.

كما قلناه في الصحارى، وليكون الحبالى كحبلى في ترك صرفها

As we said in al-Ṣaḥārā, and so that al-ḥibālā would be like ḥublā in not being declined.

فانهم لو لم يبدلوا لسقطت الياء لدخول التنوين، كما تسقط في جوار

For if they had not substituted, the ya' would have fallen due to the entry of tanwin, as it falls in jawār.

And it is said: That was in so-and-so's conception period, meaning at the time his mother conceived him.

And in the hadith: 'He forbade ḥabl al-ḥabalah.'

وفي المثل: " اختلط الحابل بالنابل "

And in the proverb: 'The hunter and the hunted became mixed up.'

ولقد أغدو وما يعدمني صاحب غير طويل المحتبل

And I would go out, and I would not be lacking a companion other than one with short fetlocks.

فإن تك أذواد أصبن ونسوة فلن تذهبوا فرغا بقتل حبال

If flocks and women were taken, you would not have gone in vain by killing Ḥibāl.
