الدم الغليظ، والقطعة منه علقة.
Thick blood, and a piece of it is ʿalaqah.
والعلقة: دودة في الماء تمص الدم، والجمع علق.
And the ʿalaqah: a worm in water that sucks blood, and its plural is ʿalaq.
وعلق القربة: لغة في عرق القربة.
And ʿallaqa al-qirbah: a dialectal variant for ʿaraqa al-qirbah (the waterskin's strap).
ما أم غفر على دعجاء ذي علق ينفي القراميد عنها الأعصم الوقل
O mother of Ghufayr, upon a dark-eyed one with a mountain (or a place of attachment), the strong, sure-footed wild goat repels the stones from her.
والعلق: الذى تعلق به البكرة من القامة.
And the ʿalaq: that by which the pulley is attached to the mast.
يقال: أعرني علقك، أي أداة بكرتك.
It is said: 'Lend me your ʿalaq,' meaning your pulley's tool.
والعلق أيضا: الهوى، يقال: نظرة من ذي علق.
And ʿalaq also: desire or passion; it is said: 'A glance from one with desire.'
وقد علقها بالكسر. وعلق حبها بقلبه، أي هويها.
And he was attached to her (ʿaliqahā) with a kasrah. And the love for her attached itself to his heart, meaning he desired her.
وعلق بها علوقا.
And he became attached to her (ʿallaqa bihā) with ʿulūqan.
وعلق يفعل كذا، مثل طفق.
And ʿallaqa [he] does such-and-such, like ṭafiqa (began).
علق حوضى نغر مكب إذا غفلت غفلة يعب
My watering trough began to be drunk from by a duckling when I was heedless, heedlessly gulping.
أي طفق يرده، ويقال أحبه واعتاده.
Meaning, he began to return to it, and it is said: he loved it and became accustomed to it.
علامت معالقها وصر الجندب
Her attachments have been made, and the cricket chirped.
أي جاء الحر ولا يمكننى الرحيل.
Meaning, the heat has come, and I cannot depart.
وعلقت المرأة، أي حبلت.
And the woman became pregnant (ʿallaqat), meaning she conceived.
وعلقت الإبل العضاه إذا تسنمتها، أي رعتها من أعلاها.
And the camels grazed on the thorny trees (ʿallaqat al-ibil al-ʿaḍāh) when they reached them from above, meaning they grazed them from their tops.
وعلق الظبي في الحبالة.
And the gazelle got caught in the snare (ʿaliqa al-ẓaby fī al-ḥibālah).
وعلقت الدابة أيضا، إذا شربت الماء فعلقت بها العلقة.
And the animal also drank (ʿallaqat), meaning it drank water and the leech attached itself to it.
ويقال: علق به علقا، إى تعلق به.
And it is said: 'ʿaliqa bih ʿalaqan,' meaning it clung to him.
والعلق: ما تتبلغ به الماشية من الشجر، وكذلك العلقة بالضم.
And ʿalaq: what livestock sustain themselves with from trees, and likewise ʿulaqah (with dammah).
وكل ما يتبلغ به من العيش فهو علقة.
And everything by which one sustains oneself in life is ʿalaqah.
ويقال أيضا: لم تبق عنده علقة، أي شئ.
And it is also said: 'He has no ʿalaqah left,' meaning nothing.
وأصاب ثوبي علق بالفتح، وهو ما علقه فجذبه.
And my garment was affected by ʿalaq (with fatha), which is what attaches to it and pulls it.
والعلق، بالكسر: النفيس من كل شئ.
And ʿalaq (with kasrah): the precious of everything.
يقال: علق مضنة، أي ما يضن به.
It is said: 'ʿalaq maḍannah,' meaning what one is stingy with.
فإنما يريد به الخمر، سماها بذلك لنفاستها.
He intends by it wine, naming it thus due to its preciousness.
والعلقة أيضا: ثوب صغير، وهو أول ثوب يتخذ للصبي.
And ʿalaqah also: a small garment, which is the first garment made for a boy.
والعلوق: ما يعلق بالانسان.
And al-ʿulūq: what attaches to a person.
والمنية علوق وعلاقة.
And death is ʿulūq and ʿalāqah.
وسائلة بثعلبة بن سير وقد علقت بثعلبة العلوق
And asking her about Tha'labah ibn Sayr, and indeed ʿulūq has attached itself to Tha'labah.
والمعالق، وهي الناقة تعطف علي غير ولدها فلا ترأمه، وإنما تشمه بأنفها وتمنع لبنها.
And al-maʿāliq, which is the female camel that is affectionate towards other than her own offspring and does not pity it, but rather sniffs it with her nose and withholds her milk.
وما بالناقة علوق، أي شئ من اللبن.
And there is no ʿulūq in the camel, meaning any milk.
والعلوق: ما تعلقه الإبل، أي ترعاه.
And al-ʿulūq: what the camels graze on, meaning they pasture on it.
رعين العلوق بهن احمرارا
They grazed on al-ʿulūq until redness appeared on them.
يقول: رعين العلوق حتى لاط بهن الاحمرار من السمن والخصب.
He says: They grazed on al-ʿulūq until redness appeared on them from fatness and fertility.
ويقال أراد بالعلوق الولد في بطنها، وأراد بالاحمرار حسن لونها عند اللقح.
And it is said he meant by al-ʿulūq the fetus in her womb, and by redness the good color of her upon conception.
والعليق: القضيم.
And al-ʿalīq: the fodder.
علقت الإبل العضاه تعلق بالضم علقا، إذا تسنمتها وتناولتها بأفواهها، وهي إبل عوالق، ومعزى عوالق.
The camels grazed on the thorny trees (ʿallaqat al-ibil al-ʿaḍāh) grazing with dammah ʿalaqan, when they reached them and took them with their mouths; they are grazing camels (ʿawāliq) and grazing goats (ʿawāliq).
إن تدن من فنن الالاءة تعلق
If it approaches the branches of the thorny tree, it grazes.
وفى الحديث: "أرواح الشهداء في حواصل طير خضر تعلق من ورق الجنة ".
And in the Hadith: 'The souls of the martyrs are in the crops of green birds, hanging from the leaves of Paradise.'
والعليقة: البعير يوجهه الرجل مع قوم يمتارون، فيعطيهم دراهم وعليقة ليمتاروا له عليها.
And al-ʿalīqah: a camel that a man sends with people who are trading, giving them dirhams and an ʿalīqah for them to trade for him with it.
وقائلة لا تركبن عليقة ومن لذة الدنيا ركوب العلائق
And a woman saying, 'You will not ride an ʿalīqah, and from the pleasures of this world is riding the ʿalā'iq.'
يقال: علقت مع فلان عليقة، وأرسلت معه عليقة.
It is said: 'I sent an ʿalīqah with so-and-so,' and 'I sent him an ʿalīqah.'
أرسلها عليقة وقد علم أن العليقات يلاقين الرقم
He sent her as an ʿalīqah, knowing that the ʿalīqāt encounter the marking (of camels).
والمعلاق والمعلوق: ما علق به من لحم أو عنب ونحوه.
And al-miʿlāq and al-maʿlūq: what is attached to it, like meat or grapes and the like.
والمعالق: العلاب الصغار، واحدها معلق.
And al-maʿāliq: the small straps, the singular of which is miʿlaq.
وإنا لنمضي بالا كف رماحنا إذا أرعشت أيديكم بالمعالق
And indeed, we advance with the strength of our spears when your hands tremble with the small straps.
والعلاقة بالكسر: علاقة القوس والسوط ونحوهما.
And al-ʿalāqah (with kasrah): the strap of a bow, a whip, and the like.
والعلاقة بالفتح: علاقة الخصومة، وعلاقة الحب.
And al-ʿalāqah (with fatha): the tie of a dispute, and the tie of love.
أعلاقة أم الوليد بعد ما أفنان رأسك كالثغام المخلس
Is it the attachment of Umm al-Walīd after your head has become white like the white-throated bird's?
والعلاقة أيضا: ما يتبلغ به من عيش.
And al-ʿalāqah also: what one sustains oneself with from life.
ومننه قولهم: ما بها من علاق، أي شئ من مرتع.
And from it is their saying: 'She has no ʿalāq,' meaning any pasture.
وفلاة كأنها ظهر ترس ليس إلا الرجيع فيها علاق
And a desert like the back of a shield, in which there is nothing but dung as sustenance.
يقول: لا تجد الإبل فيها علاقا إلا ما ترده من جرتها.
He says: The camels find no ʿalāq in it except what they regurgitate from their cud.
وما ترك الحالب بالناقة علاقا، إذا لم يدع في ضرعها شيئا.
And the milker left no ʿalāq in the camel, if he left nothing in her udder.
ورجل علاقية، مثال ثمانية، إذا علق شيئا لم يقلع عنه.
And a man ʿalāqiyyah, like thumāniyah, if he attaches to something, he does not let go.
ورجل ذو معلاق، أي شديد الخصومة.
And a man dhū miʿlāq, meaning strong in dispute.
إن تحت الأحجار حزما وجودا وخصيما ألد ذا معلاق
Indeed, beneath the stones is resolve and generosity, and a fierce opponent with persistence.
والعليق، مثال القبيط: نبت يتعلق بالشجر، يقال له بلفارسية "سرند".
And al-ʿalīq, like qubīṭ: a plant that attaches to trees, called 'sarand' in Persian.
وربما قالوا العليقى، مثال القبيطى.
And sometimes they say al-ʿalīqah, like qubīṭī.
والعولق: الغول، والكلبة الحريصة.
And al-ʿawlaq: the ghoul, and the greedy female dog.
وقولهم: هذا حديث طويل العولق، أي طويل الذنب.
And their saying: 'This is a long ʿawlaq story,' meaning a long-tailed one.
وأعلق أظفاره في الشئ، أي أنشبها.
And he sank his claws (aʿlaqa) into the thing, meaning he embedded them.
والإعلاق: إرسال العلق على الموضع ليمص الدم.
And al-iʿlāq: sending leeches onto a spot to suck blood.
"اللذود أحب إلي من الإعلاق ".
'The gargle is more beloved to me than bloodletting with leeches.'
والإعلاق أيضا: الدغر.
And al-iʿlāq also: instigation.
يقال: أعلقت المرأة ولها من العذرة، إذا رفعتها بيدها.
It is said: 'The woman raised (aʿlaqat) her veil,' meaning she lifted it with her hand.
وأعلقت القوس، أي جعلت لها علاقة.
And he attached a strap to the bow (aʿlaqa al-qaws), meaning he made a strap for it.
ويقال للرجل: أعلقت وأفلقت: أي جئت بعلق فلق، وهي الداهية، لا تجرى مثال عمر.
And it is said to a man: 'You have brought ʿallaqta and aflaqta,' meaning you have brought a great calamity (ʿalaq falaq), which is a disaster, not like ʿumar (a common name).
ويقال العلق: الجمع الكثير.
And ʿalaq is said to mean a large gathering.
ويقال للصائد: أعلقت فأدرك. أي علق الصيد في حبالتك.
And it is said to the hunter: 'You have caught (aʿlaqta) and succeeded.' Meaning, the prey got caught in your net.
وعلقت الشئ تعليقا.
And I attached (ʿallaqtu) the thing with taʿlīqan.
وعلق الرجل امرأة، من علاقة الحب.
And the man became attached to (ʿallaqa) a woman, from the tie of love.
علقتها عرضا وعلقت رجلا غيري وعلق أخرى غيرها الرجل
I became attached to her incidentally, and she became attached to another man besides me, and the man became attached to another woman.
واعتلقه، أي أحبه.
And he loved him (iʿtalaqahu), meaning he loved him.
والمعلقة من النساء: التي فقد زوجها.
And al-muʿallaqah among women: she whose husband is lost.
فتذروها كالمعلقة
Then leave her suspended like one left hanging.
وتعلقه وتعلق به، بمعنى.
And taʿallaqahu and taʿallaqa bih, are synonymous.
ويقال أيضا: تعلقته، بمعنى علقته.
And it is also said: taʿallaqtuhu, meaning ʿallaqtuhu.
لو تعلقت معاذة
If you had attached a protective amulet (taʿallaqta muʿādhah).
يريد لو علقت على نفسك معاذة لئلا تصيبك عين.
He means, if you had attached an amulet to yourself so that the evil eye would not strike you.
ليس المتعلق كالمتأنق
He who is merely attached (mutʿallaq) is not like he who is discerning (mutʾanniq).
أي ليس من يتبلغ بالشئ اليسير كمن يتأنق ويأكل ما يشاء.
Meaning, he who sustains himself with a little is not like he who is discerning and eats what he wishes.
فحط في علقى وفى مكور
He settled in ʿalaqī and in a rounded place.
والعالق أيضا: الذي يعلق العضاه، أي ينتف منها.
And al-ʿāliq also: he who grazes on thorny trees, meaning he plucks from them.
وإنما سمي عالقا لأنه يتعلق بالعضاه لطوله.
He is only named ʿāliq because he clings to the thorny trees due to his height.
