They shot an arrow and then said, 'Let us reconcile, oh I wish I were with the people when they wiped their beards.'
وذلك السهم يسمى عقيقة، وهو سهم الاعتذار، وكانوا يفعلونه في الجاهلية.
And that arrow is called 'aqiqah, and it is the arrow of apology, and they used to do it in the pre-Islamic era.
فإن رجع السهم ملطخا بالدم لم يرضوا إلا بالقود، وإن رجع نقيا مسحوا لحاهم وصالحوا على الدية، وكان مسح اللحى علامة للصلح.
If the arrow returned stained with blood, they would not be satisfied except with retribution; and if it returned clean, they would wipe their beards and reconcile for blood money, and wiping the beards was a sign of reconciliation.

He 'aqqa for his child, he 'aqqu 'aqqan, if he slaughtered for him on the day of his seventh day, and likewise if he shaved his 'aqiqah.

وأعقت الفرس، أي حملت فهي عقوق، ولا يقال معق إلا في لغة رديئة وهو من النوادر، والجمع عقق، مثل رسول ورسل.
And the mare 'a'aqqat, meaning she became pregnant, so she is 'uqūq, and 'ma'q' is not said except in a poor dialect and it is among the rare usages, and the plural is 'aqq, like rasūl and rusul.
نوى العقوق: نوى رخو تعلفه الإبل العقق.
Nawa al-'uqūq: soft date pits that the 'aqq camels feed on.
وربما سموا تلك النواة عقيقة.
And sometimes they name that date pit 'aqiqah.

وقولهم: " طلب الأبلق العقوق " مثل لما لا يكون، وذلك إن الأبلق ذكر ولا يكون الذكر حاملا.
And their saying: 'seeking the pregnant piebald horse' is an example of something that cannot be, because the piebald is male and a male cannot be pregnant.
ولو طلبوني بالعقوق أتيتهم بألف أؤديه إلى القوم أقرعا
And if they had sought me with disobedience, I would have come to them with a thousand, which I would pay to the people, having shaved my head.
والعقعق: طائر معروف، وصوته العقعقة.
And al-'uq'uq: a known bird, and its sound is al-'uq'uqah.
وموقع أثر السفار بخطمه من سود عقة أو بني الجوال
And the imprint of the traveler's mark on its muzzle from the black 'aqqah or from the Banu al-Jawwal.
وماء عق مثل قع.
And water 'aqq like qa'q.
وأعقه الله، أي أمره، مثل أقعه.
And Allah 'a'aqqahu, meaning He commanded him, like 'aqqa'ahu.
عقان النخيل والكروم: ما يخرج من أصولها.
'Uqān of palm trees and grapevines: what emerges from their roots.
وإذا لم تقطع العقان فسدت الأصول.
And if the 'uqān are not cut, the roots will be ruined.
