And 'araq al-khilal: what a man offers you, meaning he gives to you for affection.
يقول: أخذت هذا السيف عنوة، ولم أعطله للمودة.
He says: I took this sword by force, and I did not give him anything for affection.
يقال: لقيت من فلان عرق القربة، ومعناه الشدة، ولا أدري ما أصله.
It is said: I experienced from so-and-so the 'araq of the water skin, meaning hardship, and I do not know its origin.
فيقال: تجشمت لك عرق القربة.
And it is said: I undertook for you the hardship of the water skin.
ويقال: جرى الفرس عرقا أو عرقين: أي طلقا أو طلقين.
And it is said: The horse ran a gallop or two gallops: meaning a burst or two bursts of speed.
ولبن عرق بكسر الراء، وهو الذي يجعل في سقاء ويشد على البعير ليس بينه وبين جنب البعير وقاية، فإذا أصابه عرق البعير أفسد طعمه وتغيرت رائحته.
And 'araq milk, with a kasra on the ra, is that which is put in a waterskin and tied to a camel without any protection between it and the camel's flank; if it is affected by the camel's sweat, its taste is spoiled and its smell changes.
والعرقة: الطرة تنسج جوانب الفسطاط، وكذلك الخشبة التي توضع معترضة بين سافي الحائط.
And 'araqah: the border woven for the sides of a tent, and also the beam placed horizontally between the two sides of a wall.

العرق الظالم: أن يجئ الرجل إلى أرض قد أحياها غيره فيغرس فيها أو يزرع ليستوجب به الأرض.
The unjust claim: is when a man comes to land that another has revived, and plants or cultivates in it to claim the land.
ويقال أيضا: في الشراب عرق من الماء ليس بالكثير.
And it is also said: in the drink there is a trace of water, not much.
ذات عرق: موضع بالبادية.
Dhat 'Arq: a place in the desert.
والعرق بالفتح: مصدر قولك عرقت العظم أعرقة بالضم عرقا ومعرقا، إذا أكلت ما عليه من اللحم.
And 'araq, with fatha: the masdar of your saying 'araqtu al-'adhma, 'a'riquhu with damma, 'araqan and ma'riqan, if you eat what is on it of meat.
أكف لساني عن صديقي فإن أجأ إليه فإني عارق كل معرق
I restrain my tongue from my friend, but if I turn to him, I am one who eats off every bone.
والعرق أيضا: العظم الذي أخذ عنه اللحم، والجمع عراق بالضم.
And 'araq also: the bone from which the meat has been removed, and the plural is 'iraq with damma.
ورجل معرق العظام ومعترق، أي قليل اللحم.
And a man ma'riq al-'idham and mu'tariq, meaning having little flesh.
وتعرقت العظم، مثل عرقته.
And ta'arraqtu the bone, like 'araqtuhu.

إذا كان الجلد في أسفل السقاء مثنيا ثم خرز عليه فهو العراق، والجمع عرق.
If the skin at the bottom of the waterskin is folded and then stitched, it is al-'iraq, and the plural is 'araq.
وإذا سوى ثم خزر عليه غير مثنى فهو الطباب.
And if it is flattened and stitched without folding, it is al-tabab.
والعراق: الطبابة، وهي الجلدة التي تغطى بها عيون الخرز.
And al-'iraq: al-tababah, which is the piece of skin used to cover the stitching holes.
وأعرق الرجل، أي صار عريقا، وهو الذي له عرق في الكرم، وكذلك الفرس.
And the man became 'arqa, meaning he became 'ariq, who has a lineage in generosity, and likewise a horse.
فلان معرق يقال ذلك في اللؤم والكرم جميعا.
So-and-so is mu'arriq, this is said for both baseness and nobility.
وقد أعرق فيه أعمامه وأخواله.
And his paternal uncles and maternal uncles have established a lineage in it.
إن امرأ ليس بينه وبين آدم أب حي لمعرق له في الموت
Indeed, a person who has no living father between him and Adam has a lineage in death.
كما يقال لمعرق له في الكرم، أي له عرق في ذلك، يموت لا محالة.
Just as it is said for one who has a lineage in generosity, meaning he has a lineage in that, he will inevitably die.
وأعرق الشجر والنبات، إذا امتدت عروقه في الأرض.
And the trees and plants became 'arqa, if their roots extended into the ground.
وعرق فلان في الارض يعرق عروقا، مثال جلس جلوسا، أي ذهب.
And so-and-so went into the land, 'araqa 'uruqan, like jalas julusan, meaning he went.
لأنحتين للعظم ذو أنا عارقه
I will surely reach for the bone, the one who gnaws it.
وأعرقت الشراب فهو معرق
And I made the drink diluted, so it is diluted.
أي فيه عرق من الماء ليس بالكثير.
Meaning there is a trace of water in it, not much.
وعرقت الشراب تعريقا، إذا مزجته من غير أن تبالغ فيه.
And I diluted the drink ta'riqan, if you mixed it without exaggerating.
ويقال أيضا رجل معرق (1) الخدين، إذا كان قليل لحم الخدين.
And it is also said a man mu'arriq al-khaddayn, if he has little flesh on his cheeks.
ويقال: عرق في الإناء، أي اجعل فيه دون الملء.
And it is said: 'araq in the pot, meaning put in it less than full.
وعرقت في الدلو، إذا استقيت فيها دون الملء.
And I filled the bucket 'araqtan, if you drew water in it less than full.
لا تملأ الدلو وعرق فيها
Do not fill the bucket, and put less than full in it.
ألا ترى حبار من يسقيها
Do you not see the abundance of those who water it?
والعرقوة الدلو بفتح العين، ولا تقل عرقوة وإنما تضم فعلوة إذا كان ثانيه نون، مثل عنصوة.
And 'araqwat al-dalw, with fatha on the 'ayn, and do not say 'urquwah, but rather damma on fa'lawa if the second letter is noon, like 'ansawah.
والعرقوتان: الخشبتان اللتلان تعرضان على الدلو كالصليب، والجمع العراقى.
And al-'araqutan: the two crossbeams that lie across the bucket like a cross, and the plural is al-'araqi.
خذلت، منها العراقى فانجذم
You failed me, from it the crossbars, and it broke.
أراد بقوله " منها " الدلو، وبقوله " انجذم " السجل، لان السجل والدلو واحد.
He meant by 'from it' the bucket, and by 'it broke' the bucket, because the bucket and the pail are the same.
وإن جمعت بحذف الهاء قلت عرق، وأصله عرقو إلا أنه فعل به ما فعل بثلاثة أحق في جمع حقو.
And if you pluralize by omitting the ha, you say 'araq, and its origin is 'araqu, except that it was treated as three 'ahaq in the plural of 'haqw.
وتقول: عرقيت الدلو عرقاة، إذا شددتهما عليها.
And you say: 'araqaytu the bucket 'araqatan, if you tightened them upon it.
وذات العراقي: الداهية.
And Dhat al-'araqi: the calamity.
لقيتم من تدرئكم علينا وقتل سراتنا ذات العراقي
You met us with your defense against us and the killing of our nobles, a calamity.
يقال: هي مأخوذة من عراقي الإكام، وهي التي غلظت جدا لا ترتقى إلا بمشقة.
It is said: it is derived from the difficult slopes of the hills, which are very steep and cannot be climbed except with hardship.
والعرقوتان أيضا، هما الخشبتان اللتان تضمان ما بين واسط الرحل والمؤخرة.
And al-'araqutan also, they are the two wooden pieces that join what is between the middle of the saddle and the rear part.
