الشَّفَق: الحمرة من غروب الشمس إلى وقت العشاء الآخرة، فإذا ذهب قيل: غاب الشفق.
The twilight: the redness from sunset until the time of the late evening prayer, and when it disappears, it is said: the twilight has gone.
عليه ثوب كأنه الشفق، وكان أحمر.
He wore a garment that was like the twilight, and it was red.
والشفقة: الاسم من الإشفاق، وكذلك الشفق.
And compassion: is the noun from being compassionate, and likewise the twilight.
تهوى حياتي وأهوى موتها شفقا

وإذا قلت: أشفقت منه فإنما تعنى حذرته، وأصلهما واحد.

وأنكره أهل اللغة.

والشفق: الردئ من الاشياء، يقال عطاء مشفق، أي مقلل.
And the twilight: refers to the inferior of things; a meager gift is said to be 'mushfiq,' meaning reduced.
ملك أعز من الملوك تحلبت للسائلين يداه غير مشفق
A king more honored than kings, whose hands were generous to supplicants, not meager.
