Imru' al-Qais said, describing a horse and likening it to an eagle: As if I were a powerful eagle with wide wings, a low-flying one from the eagles, I lowered my reins.
وداففت الرجل مدافة ودفافا: أجهزت عليه.
I dispatched the man with madafah and daffaf: I finished him off.
ومن حديث خالد بن الوليد رضى الله عنه: " من كان معه أسير فليدافه ".
And from the hadith of Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Whoever has a captive with him, let him finish him off.'
قال الاصمعي: يقال تداف القوم، إذا ركب بعضهم بعضا.
Al-Asma'i said: It is said the people tadāffu, if some of them ride upon others.
ويقال: خذ ما استدف لك، أي خذ ما أمكن وتسهل، مثل استطف.
And it is said: Take what is easy for you, meaning take what is possible and easy, like istatiffa.
والدال مبدلة من الطاء.
And the dāl is a substitution for the ṭā'.
واستدف أمرهم، أي استتب واستقام.
And their affair istadaffa, meaning it became established and straightened.
