And what was their drink?
فقال: الجدف.
And he said: 'Al-Jadaf'.
وتفسيره في الحديث أنه ما لا يغطى من الشراب.
And its interpretation in the Hadith is that it is that which is not covered of the drink.
ويقال: نبات يكون باليمن لا يحتاج الذى يأكله أن يشرب عليه الماء.
And it is said: a plant that grows in Yemen, the one who eats it does not need to drink water with it.
قال الاصمعي: التجديف هو الكفر بالنعم.
Al-Asma'i said: 'Al-Tajdif is the ingratitude for blessings'.
يقال منه: جدف تجديفا.
It is said from it: 'Jadafa tajdifan'.
وقال الأموي: هو استقلال ما أعطاه الله تعالى.
And Al-Amuwi said: 'It is to consider insignificant what God Almighty has given'.
وفي الحديث " لا تجدفوا بنعم الله ".
And in the Hadith: 'Do not be ungrateful for God's blessings'.
والجنادف بالضم: القصير الغليظ الخلقة.
And Al-Junadaf (with dammah) means short and thick of build.
قال جندل بن الراعى، يهجو عدى بن الرقاع:
Jandal bin Al-Ra'i said, satirizing Adi bin Al-Ruqqa':
جنادف لاحق بالرأس منكبه
A short, thick-set man, his shoulder close to his head
كأنه كودن يوشى بكلاب
As if he were a young camel adorned with patterns
والمرأة جنادفة.
And the woman is Junadafah.
