والأنوف: المرأة الطيبة ريح الأنف.
And al-anūf is a woman with a pleasant-smelling nose.
وأنفت الرجل: ضربت أنفه.
And I struck the man's nose (anftu rajulan: darabtu anfah).
ويقال: آنفه الماء، بلغ أنفه، وذلك إذا نزل في النهر.
And it is said: The water reached his nose (ānāfahū al-mā', balagha anfah), which is when one wades into a river.
وروضة أنف بالضم، أي لم يرعها أحد.
And a meadow (rawḍah) anaf (with dammah) means no one has grazed it.
وأنفت الإبل، إذا وطئت كلأ أنفا، وهو الذي لم يرع.
And the camels trod upon (anifat) the herbage when they trampled it as anaf, which is that which has not been grazed.
وآنفتها أنا فهي مؤنفة إذا تتبعت بها أنف المرعى.
And I followed them (ānraftuhā anā fa-hiya mu'annafah) if I followed them in search of the prime pasture.
أرض أنيفة النبت، إذا أسرعت النبات.
Land with fast-growing (anīfah) vegetation, if the growth is rapid.
وتلك أرض آنف بلاد الله.
And that is a land (arḍ ānif) of God's lands.
وكأس أنف: لم يشرب بها قبل ذلك، كأنه استونف شربها، مثال روضة أنف.
And a cup (ka's) anaf: it was not drunk from before, as if its drinking was newly initiated (istūnafa sharbuhā), like an unspoiled meadow.
ويقال أيضا: آتيك من ذي أنف، كما يقال من ذي قبل، أي فيما يستقبل.
And it is also said: I will come to you from dhi anf, as it is said from dhi qabl, meaning in the future.
وأنف من الشئ يأنف أنفا وأنفة، أي استنكف.
And one disdains (anifa) something, yánifu anafan wa anafah, meaning to feel disdain.
يقال: ما رأيت أحمى أنفا ولا آنف، من فلان.
It is said: I have not seen anyone more proud of their nose (aḥmā anfān) nor more disdainful (ānif) than so-and-so.
وأنف البعير، أي اشتكى أنفه من البرة، فهو أنف، مثل تعب فهو تعب، عن ابن السكيت.
And the camel is anif, meaning its nose is ailing from the ring, so it is anif, like one who is tired is ta'ib, according to Ibn al-Sikkit.
وذلك للوجع الذى به، فهو ذلول منقاد.
And that is due to the pain it has, so it is docile and obedient.
كان الاصل في هذا أن يقال مأنوف، لانه مفعول به، كما قالوا مصدور للذى يشتكى صدره، ومبطون، وجميع مافى الجسد على هذا، ولكن هذا الحرف جاء شاذا عنهم.
The original for this should have been ma'nūf, because it is the object, just as they said maṣdūr for one who complains of their chest, and mabṭūn, and all body parts are like this, but this word came irregularly from them.
وتقول: آنفته أنا إينافا، إذا جعلته يشتكي أنفه.
And you say: I made him suffer from his nose (ān aftuhū anā īnafān), if you made him complain of his nose.
والاستئناف: الابتداء، وكذلك الائتناف.
And al-isti'nāf means beginning anew, and likewise al-i'tināf.
وقلت كذا آنفا وسالفا.
And I said such-and-such recently (ānifan) and previously (sālifan).
والتأنيف: تحديد طرف الشئ.
And al-ta'nīf is defining the tip of something.
