الألف عدد، وهو مذكر، يقال: هذا ألف واحد، ولا يقال: واحدة.

The 'alf' is a number, and it is masculine; one says: 'This is one thousand', and one does not say 'one thousand' (feminine).

وهذا ألف أقرع، أي تام، ولا يقال: قرعاء.

And this is a complete 'alf', meaning perfect, and one does not say 'qara'a' (feminine).

والجمع ألوف وآلاف.

And the plural is 'uluf' and 'alaf'.

وألفه يألفه بالكسر: أعطاه ألفا.

And 'alfahu ya'alfuhu' (with kasra) means: he gave him a thousand.

والهاء للمبالغة.

And the 'ha' is for exaggeration.

والالف: الأليف.

And 'al-ilf' is: the familiar one.

يقال: حنت الإلف إلى الالف.

It is said: the familiar one longed for the familiar one.

قال ذو الرمة: فأصبح البكر فردا من ألائفه

Dhu al-Rummah said: So the young camel became alone from its companions

والالاف: جمع آلف مثل كافر وكفار.

And 'al-alaf' is the plural of 'a'lif', like 'kafir' and 'kuffar'.

وفلان قد ألف هذا الموضع بالكسر يألفه إلفا، وآلفه إياه غيره.

And so-and-so has become familiar with this place (with kasra), he becomes familiar with it through familiarity, and another made him familiar with it.

ويقال أيضا: آلفت الموضع أولفه إيلافا، وكذلك آلفت الموضع أؤالفه مؤالفة وإلافا، فصار صورة أفعل وفاعل في الماضي واحدا.

And it is also said: 'alaf-tu al-mawdi'a u'lifuhu ilafan', and likewise 'alaf-tu al-mawdi'a u'alifuhu mu'alafatan wa ilafan', so the form of 'af'ala' and 'fa'ala' in the past tense became one.

وألفت بين الشيئين تأليفا، فنألفا وأتلفا.

And I united two things with unification, so they became united and reconciled.

ويقال أيضا: ألف مؤلفة، أي مكملة.

And it is also said: 'alf mu'allafah', meaning complete.

وتألفته على الإسلام.

And I reconciled him to Islam.

ومن المؤلفة قلوبهم.

And from those whose hearts are reconciled.

لإيلاف قريش إيلافهم

For the accustomedness of Quraysh, their accustomedness

يقول تعالى: أهلكت أصحاب الفيل لأولف قريشا مكة، ولتؤلف قريش رحلة الشتاء والصيف، أي تجمع بينهما، إذا فرغوا من ذه أخذوا في ذه.

Allah the Almighty says: I destroyed the companions of the elephant so that I might make Quraysh accustomed to Mecca, and so that Quraysh might become accustomed to the winter and summer journeys, meaning He united them; when they finished with one, they took up the other.
