Abū Qays ibn al-Aslatt said: The eggshell has grazed my head, and I have not tasted sleep except for a light nap.
وهجيع من الليل، مثل هزيع.
And a portion of the night, like a division (huzayʿ).
وهجع القوم تهجيعا، أي نوموا.
And the people slept (hajaʿū) with a sleeping (tahjīʿan), meaning they slept.
ويقال: أتيت فلانا بعد هجعة، أي بعد نومة خفيفة من أول الليل.
And it is said: I came to so-and-so after a hijʿah, meaning after a light sleep from the early part of the night.
والهجعة منه، كالجلسة من الجلوس.
And al-hijʿah is from it, like al-jalsah is from al-julūs (sitting).
ويقال: رجل هجعة، مثال همرة، وهجع، ومهجع، للغافل عما يراد به، الأحمق.
And it is said: a man (rajul) hijʿah, like humrah, and hajaʿ, and mahjaʿ, meaning heedless of what is intended for him, foolish.
وأصله من الهجوع.
And its origin is from al-hujūʿ (sleep).
وهجع جوعه مثل هجأ، إذا انكسر ولم يشبع.
And his hunger was broken (hajaʿa) like (hajaʾa), when it is weakened and not satisfied.
وأهجع فلان غرثه، إذا سكن ضرمه، متل أهجأ.
And so-and-so quelled his hunger (ahjaʿa gharthahu), if his burning desire subsided, like ahjaʾa.
والهجنع بتشديد النون: الطويل الضخم عن الأصمعي.
And al-hinjaʿ (with shaddah on the nūn): tall and large, according to Al-Aṣmaʿī.
قال ذو الرمة يصف ظليما: هجنع راح في سوداء مخملة * من القطائف أعلى ثوبه الهدب
Dhū al-Rūmmah said, describing an ostrich: A tall, stout one went off into a black, velvety expanse * from brocades, the fringe adorning the top of its garment.
