And in the proverb: Do not remove a thorn with a thorn, for its bias is with it.
خاصمت فلانا فكان ضلعك علي، أي ميلك
I disputed with so-and-so, and your bias was against me, meaning your inclination.
والضلع بالتحريك: الاعوجاج خلقة
And the rib (with haraka) means: crookedness by nature.
وقد يحمل السيف المجرب ربه * على ضلع في متنه وهو قاطع
And the tested sword may carry its owner * to a crookedness in its blade, yet it is sharp.
تقول منه: ضلع بالكسر يضلع ضلعا، وهو ضلع
You say from it: dal'a (verb, kasra) yadhla'u (present, damma) dal'an (masdar), and it is crookedness.
والضلع أيضا في قول سويد بن أبي كاهل: سعة الأخلاق فينا والضلع
And the rib also, in the saying of Suwayd bin Abi Kahil: Breadth of character in us and strength.
القوة واحتمال الثقيل، قاله الاصمعي
Strength and bearing the heavy, said Al-Asma'i.

And strength means: power and the robustness of the ribs.
تقول منه: ضلع الرجل بالضم فهو ضليع
You say from it: dal'a (verb, damma) the man, so he is dhal'i' (strong).
الفرس الضليع: التام الخلق المجفر، الغليظ الألواح، الكثير العصب
The strong horse: perfectly formed, stout, thick-boned, with abundant sinew.
وتضلع الرجل، أي امتلأ شبعا وريا
And the man became full, meaning he was filled with food and drink.
والإضلاع: الإمالة
And making something incline means: causing deviation.
حمل مضلع، أي مثقل
A burdened load, meaning heavy.
وحمل لمضلع الأثقال
And a load for the one burdened with heavy loads.
ويقال فلان مضطلع بهذا الامر، أي قوي عليه
And it is said: So-and-so is capable of this matter, meaning strong for it.
وهو مفتعل من الضلاعة
And it is derived from strength.
ولا تقل مطلع بالإدغام
And do not say muttali' by assimilation.
فالاضطلاع من الضلاعة وهي القوة، والاطلاع من العلو، من قولهم: اطلعت الثنية، أي علوتها، أي هو عال لذلك الأمر مالك له
So 'istilaa' (capability) is from 'dhalaa'ah' (strength), which is power, and 'ittilaa'' (overlooking) is from 'uluw' (height), from their saying: 'attala'tu al-thaniyah', meaning I ascended it, meaning he is high for that matter, in control of it.
وتضليع الثوب: جعل وشيه على هيئة الاضلاع
And patterning a garment means: making its embroidery in the form of ribs.
