الروع بالفتح: الفزع.
Al-rawʿ (with fatḥa) is fright.
والروعة: الفزعة، ومنه قولهم: أفرخ روعه، أي ذهب فزعه وسكن.
And al-rawʿah is the fright; hence their saying: 'afrakha rawʿuhu, meaning his fright departed and he calmed down.
والروع بالضم: القلب والعقل.
And al-ruwʿ (with ḍamma) is the heart and the intellect.
يقال وقع ذلك في روعي، أي في خلدي وبالي.
It is said, 'That occurred in my ruwʿ,' meaning in my mind and thoughts.
إن روح القدس نفث في روعي
Indeed, the Spirit of Holiness breathed into my ruwʿ.
وراعَ فلانًا وروعْتُهُ فارتاعَ، أي أفزعْتُهُ ففَزِعَ.
And I startled someone, and I frightened him, so he became frightened; meaning, I alarmed him, so he became afraid.
وتروَّعَ، أي تفزَّعَ.
And tarawwaʿa, meaning he became frightened.
وقولهم: لا تَرْعَ، أي لا تَخَفْ ولا يَلْحَقُكَ خوفٌ.
And their saying: 'lā tarʿ,' meaning do not fear and let no fear overtake you.
رفونى وقالوا يا خويلد لم ترع
They consoled me and said, 'O Khuyilid, you are not afraid.'
فقلت وأنكرت الوجوه هم هم
So I said, and I did not recognize the faces, 'They are them.'
وللأنثى لا تراعي.
And for the feminine, 'lā turāʿī.'
أيا شبه ليلى لا تراعي فإنني
O likeness of Layla, do not be alarmed, for I am
لك اليوم من وحشية لصديق
To you today, from the wild creatures, a friend.
والروعاء من النوق: الحديدة الفؤاد، وكذلك الفرس، ولا يوصف به الذكر.
And al-rawʿā' among female camels is one strong of heart; likewise a mare, and a male is not described with it.
وراعَني الشئ، أي أعجبني.
And a thing impressed me, meaning it pleased me.
والأروع من الرجال: الذي يعجبك حُسْنُهُ.
And al-arwaʿ among men is he whose handsomeness impresses you.
وامرأة روعاء، بيّنة الروع.
And a woman is rawʿā', clearly impressive.
