وَأَتْبَعْتُ القَوْمَ عَلَى أَفْعَلْتُ، إِذَا كَانُوا قَدْ سَبَقُوكَ فَلَحِقْتَهُمْ
And I overtook the people ('atba'tu al-qawma') using the pattern 'af'altu', if they had preceded you and you caught up to them.
وَأَتْبَعْتُ أَيْضًا غَيْرِي
And I also made others follow ('atba'tu')
يُقَالُ أَتْبَعْتُهُ الشَّيْءَ فَتَبِعَهُ
It is said: I made him follow the thing, and he followed it.
قَالَ الأَخْفَشُ: تَبِعْتُهُ وَأَتْبَعْتُهُ بِمَعْنًى، مِثْلُ رَدِفْتُهُ وَأَرْدَفْتُهُ
Al-Akhfash said: 'tabi'tuhu' and 'atba'tuhu' have the same meaning, like 'radiftuhu' and 'ardaftuhu'.
وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ الْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ}
And from this is His saying, the Almighty: 'Except for one who snatches [a snatch] and is pursued by a flaming projectile.'
وَمِنْهُ الإِتْبَاعُ فِي الكَلَامِ، مِثْلُ حَسَنٍ بِسِنٍّ، وَقَبِيحٍ شَقِيحٍ
And from this is 'al-itba'' in speech, like 'hasan bi-sin' (good with a tooth) and 'qabih shaqih' (ugly with a gap).
وَالتَّبَعُ يَكُونُ وَاحِدًا وَجَمَاعَةً
And 'at-taba'' can be singular or plural.
وَقَالَ أَبُو زَيْدٍ: يُقَالُ تَابَعَ الرَّجُلُ عَمَلَهُ، أَيْ أَتْقَنَهُ وَأَحْكَمَهُ
And Abu Zayd said: It is said that a man perfected ('taba'a') his work, meaning he mastered and finalized it.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ: " تَابَعْنَا الأَعْمَالَ فَلَمْ نَجِدْ شَيْئًا أَبْلَغَ فِي طَلَبِ الآخِرَةِ مِنَ الزُّهْدِ فِي الدُّنْيَا "، أَيْ أَحْكَمْنَاهَا وَعَرَفْنَاهَا
And in the hadith of Abu Waqid al-Laythi: 'We mastered ('taba'na') the deeds and found nothing more effective in seeking the hereafter than asceticism in this world,' meaning we mastered and knew them.
وَتَتَبَّعْتُ الشَّيْءَ تَتَبُّعًا، أَيْ طَلَبْتُهُ مُتَتَبِّعًا لَهُ
And I sought out ('tatabba'tu') the thing, meaning I sought it out, following it.
وَقَوْلُ القُطَامِيِّ: وَخَيْرُ الأَمْرِ مَا اسْتَقْبَلْتَ مِنْهُ * وَلَيْسَ بِأَنْ تَتَبَّعَهُ اتِّبَاعَا *
And the saying of Al-Qutami: 'And the best of matters is what you face forward from it * And not by you following it, following.'
وَالتَّبَاعَةُ مِثْلُ التَّبِعَةِ
And 'at-tabaa'ah' is like 'at-taba'ah'.
وَالتَّبِيعُ: الَّذِي لَكَ عَلَيْهِ مَالٌ
And 'at-tabee'' is: the one to whom you have a debt.
وَقَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوا لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ تَبِيعًا}
And His saying, the Almighty: 'then you will not find for yourselves against us any follower for it.'
وَالتَّبِيعُ: وَلَدُ البَقَرَةِ فِي أَوَّلِ سَنَةٍ، وَالأُنْثَى تَبِيعَةٌ
And 'at-tabee'' is: the calf of a cow in its first year, and the female is 'tabee'ah'.
وَقَوْلُهُمْ: مَعَهُ تَابِعَةٌ، أَيْ مِنَ الجِنِّ
And their saying: 'He has a 'tabi'ah' with him,' meaning from the jinn.
