And so-and-so wasted it, which is when they divide it and a share remains among them, so it is said, 'Who will consume the camel?' meaning, who will take this share.
فَإِذَا لَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْهَا نَصِيبٌ قَالُوا: شَاطَتِ الْجَزُورُ، أَيْ نَفَقَتْ.
And if no portion remained, they would say: 'The camel was divided,' meaning it was consumed.
وَشَاطَ فُلَانٌ الدِّمَاءَ، أَيْ خَلَطَهَا، كَأَنَّهُ سَفَكَ دَمَ الْقَاتِلِ عَلَى دَمِ الْمَقْتُولِ.
And so-and-so mixed the bloods, meaning he mingled them, as if he spilled the blood of the killer upon the blood of the murdered.
أَحَارِثُ إِنَّا لَوْ تَشَاطَ دِمَاؤُنَا * تَزِيلُنَّ حَتَّى لَا بِمَسْ دَمٍ دَمَا
O Harith, if our bloods were to mingle, we would remove until no blood remains by the touch of blood.
وَشَاطَ فُلَانٌ، أَيْ ذَهَبَ دَمُهُ هَدَرًا.
And so-and-so's blood went to waste, meaning his blood was shed in vain.
وَيُقَالُ أَشَاطَهُ وَأَشَاطَ بِدَمِهِ وَأَشَاطَ دَمَهُ، أَيْ عَرَّضَهُ لِلْقَتْلِ.
And it is said: 'He exposed him,' 'He exposed his blood,' and 'He exposed his blood,' meaning he exposed him to being killed.
وَشَاطَ، بِمَعْنَى عَجَّلَ.
And 'shata' means he hastened.
وَشَاطَ السَّمْنُ، إِذَا نَضِجَ حَتَّى يَحْتَرِقَ، وَكَذَلِكَ الزَّيْتُ.
And the ghee scorched, when it cooked until it burned, and likewise the oil.
وَمَنْهَلٍ وَرَدْتُهُ الْتِقَاطًا * أَصْفَرَ مِثْلَ الزَّيْتِ لَمَّا شَاطَا
And a watering place I approached by chance * Yellow like oil when it had scorched.
وَشَاطَتِ الْقِدْرُ، أَيِ احْتَرَقَتْ وَلَصِقَ بِهَا الشَّيْءُ، وَأَشَطْتُهَا أَنَا.
And the pot burnt, meaning it burned and the thing stuck to it, and I made it burn.
وَالشِّيَاطُ: رِيحُ قُطْنَةٍ مُحْتَرِقَةٍ.
And al-shiyat is the smell of burnt cotton.
يُقَالُ: شَيَّطْتُ رَأْسَ الْغَنَمِ وَشَوَّطْتُهُ، إِذَا أَحْرَقْتَ صُوفَهُ لِتُنَظِّفَهُ.
It is said: 'I scorched the sheep's head and I scorched it,' if you burn its wool to clean it.
يُقَالُ: شَيَّطَ فُلَانٌ اللَّحْمَ، إِذَا دَخَّنَهُ وَلَمْ يُنْضِجْهُ.
It is said: 'So-and-so smoked the meat,' meaning he smoked it without cooking it.
لَمَّا أَجَابَتْ صَفِيرًا كَانَتْ آيَتُهَا * مِنْ قَابِسٍ شَيَّطَ الْوُجَعَاءَ بِالنَّارِ
When it responded with a whistle, its sign was * From a fire-bearer who scorched the ailing one with fire.
وَغَضِبَ فُلَانٌ فَاسْتَشَاطَ، أَيْ احْتَدَمَ، كَأَنَّهُ الْتَهَبَ فِي غَضَبِهِ.
And so-and-so became angry and flared up, meaning he became enraged, as if he ignited in his anger.
هُوَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ نَاقَةٌ مِشْيَاطٌ، وَهِيَ الَّتِي يَسْرُعُ فِيهَا السَّمْنُ.
It is from their saying: 'A fast-fattening she-camel,' which is one that gains fat quickly.
وَإِبِلٌ مَشَايِيطُ.
And fast-fattening camels.
وَاسْتَشَاطَ الْبَعِيرُ، أَيْ سَمِنَ.
And the camel grew fat, meaning it gained weight.
