And so-and-so dedicated himself to such-and-such a matter, meaning he made it known for it and prepared it.
ومنهم سمي الشرط لأنهم جعلوا لأنفسهم علامة يعرفون بها، الواحد شرطة وشرطي
And from this, the 'shurtah' (guards) were named because they made a mark for themselves by which they are known, the singular is 'shurtah' and 'shurti'.
