It is said: He gave him a handful of barley flour or dates, meaning a fistful of it.
والمقبض بفتح الميم وكسر الباء، من القوس والسيف: حيث يقبض عليه بجمع الكف.
And al-miqbaḍ (with fatha on the mim and kasra on the ba), of a bow and sword: where it is gripped with the closed fist.
وأقبضت السيف والسكين، أي جعلت له مقبضا.
And I gave the sword and knife a handle, meaning I made a handle for it.
ويقال: رجل قبضة رفضة، للذي يتمسك بالشئ ثم لا يلبث أن يدعه ويرفضه.
And it is said: a man is qabḍah rafḍah, for one who holds onto something then soon lets it go and abandons it.
وراع قبضة، إذا كان منقبضا لا يتفسح في رعي غنمه.
And a shepherd is qabḍah, if he is withdrawn, not letting his flock graze freely.
وتقبض عنه، أي اشمأز.
And he shrank from it, meaning he felt aversion.
وتقبضت الجلدة في النار، إذا انزوت.
And the skin contracted in the fire, meaning it shriveled.
وقبضت الشئ تقبيضا: جمعته وزويته.

The rajaz poet said: How do you see it, and the drivers urge on with the goad at night while the loads sway?

قال رؤبة: قباضة بين العنيف واللبق
Ru'bah said: skillful, between the harsh and the adept.
والقنبظة من النساء: القصيرة، والنون زائدة.
And al-qunbuzah among women: the short one, and the 'n' is extra.
قال الفرزدق: إذا القنبظات السود طوفن بالضحى رقدن عليهن الحجال المسجف
Al-Farazdaq said: When the short black women paraded in the forenoon, the covered palanquins slept upon them.
والرجل قنبظ.
And the man is short.
