وَرَمَضَتِ الشَّاةُ أَرْمَضُهَا رَمْضًا، إِذَا شَقَقْتَهَا وَعَلَيْهَا جِلْدُهَا وَطَرَحْتَهَا عَلَى الرَّضْفَةِ وَجَعَلْتَ فَوْقَهَا الْمَلَّةَ لِتَنْضَجَ.

وَارْتَمَضَتْ كَبِدُهُ: فَسَدَتْ.

And his liver spoiled (irtamaḍat).

It is said: When they transferred the names of the months from the ancient language, they named them after the times in which they occurred, so this month coincided with the days of intense heat (ramaḍ al-ḥarr), and was thus named.
