Abu Ali Al-Nahwi said: Al-Majus and Al-Yahud were only known in the manner of Yahudi and Yahud, and Majusi and Majus; so it was pluralized according to the pattern of sha'irah and sha'ir. Then the plural was made definite with 'al-' (the definite article). If it were not for that, it would not be permissible to enter 'al-' upon them, because they are definite.

وهما مؤنثان فجرتا في كلامهم مجرى القبيلتين، ولم يجعلا كالحيين في باب الصرف.

And they (Al-Majus and Al-Yahud) are feminine, and they were treated in their speech like two tribes, and not like Al-Hayyan in the matter of inflection.

وأنشد لامرئ القيس: أحار أريك برقا هب وهنا * كنار مجوس تستعر استعارا *

And he recited for Imru' al-Qais: O Harith, I show you lightning flashing yonder * Like the fire of the Magians, blazing intensely *

وقد تمجس الرجل: صار منهم.

And the man became Majusi: he became one of them.

ومجسه غيره.

And another person made him Majusi.

وفي الحديث: " فأبواه يمجسانه ".

And in the Hadith: 'His parents made him a Magian.'
