وقد كنت من ليلى سنين ثمانيا * على صير أمر ما يمر وما يحلو — And I had been with Layla for eight years * on the brink of a matter, neither pleasant nor unpleasant.

وفى الحديث أن سالم بن عبد الله مربه رجل معه صير، فذاق منه ثم سأل عنه: كيف تبيعه؟ — And in the hadith, Salim bin Abdullah was passed by a man with some cheese, he tasted it and then asked about it: How do you sell it?

وفى الحديث: " من نظر من صير باب ففقئت عينه فهى هدر " — And in the hadith: 'Whoever looks through a crack in a door and his eye is put out, it is considered permissible (blood money is not due).'

وماله صيور، أي رأى وعقل.

And he has no 'sayur', meaning sense or intellect.

وتصير فلان أباه، إذا نزع إليه في الشبه.

And 'tasayyara' so-and-so his father, if he took after him in resemblance.

وصير الأمر، بالكسر: مصيره وعاقبته.

And 'as-sayr' of the matter, with kasra: its destination and its consequence.

يقال: فلان على صير أمر، إذا كان على إشراف من قضائه.

It is said: So-and-so is on the 'sayr' of a matter, if he is on the verge of its completion.

Jarir said, satirizing a people: They used to put onions in their cheese * then roast them like salted fish they had dried.

والصير أيضا: شق الباب.

And 'as-sayr' also means: a crack in the door.

وفى الحديث: " من نظر من صير باب ففقئت عينه فهى هدر ", وتفسيره في الحديث أن الصير الشق.

And in the hadith: 'Whoever looks through a crack in a door and his eye is put out, it is considered permissible (blood money is not due)', and its explanation in the hadith is that 'as-sayr' is the crack.

وقال أبو عبيد: لم يسع هذا الحرف إلا في هذا الحديث.

And Abu Ubaid said: This word ('as-sayr' meaning door crack) is only found in this hadith.

والصيرة: حظيرة الغنم، وجمعها صير، مثل سيرة وسير.

And 'as-sayrah' is: a sheep pen, and its plural is 'sayr', like 'sirah' and 'siyar'.

قال الاخطل: واذكر غدانة عدانا مزنمة * من الحبلق تبنى حوله (1) الصير

Al-Akhtal said: And remember the lushness of our sheep pens, fenced with the thorny shrub, around which the pen is built.
