ويقال: إنه لفي صفرة للذي يعتريه الجنون، إذا كان في أيام يزول فيها عقله، لأنهم كانوا يمسحونه بشئ من الزعفران.
And it is said: He is in a state of yellowness for one who is afflicted with madness, when it is during days when his mind leaves him, because they used to rub him with some saffron.
والصفر بالضم: الذي تعمل منه الأواني.
And as-sifr (with damma): that from which vessels are made.
وأبو عبيدة يقوله: بالكسر.
And Abu Ubaidah pronounces it: with kasra.
والصفر أيضا: الخالي.
And as-sifr is also: empty.
يقال: بيت صفر من المتاع، ورجل صفر اليدين
It is said: a house empty of possessions, and a man empty-handed

And their saying: 'This does not stick to me,' meaning it does not cling to me nor does my soul accept it.
والصفر أيضا: مصدر قولك صفر الشئ بالكسر، أي خلا.
And as-sifr is also: the masdar of your saying 'sifr' (with kasra), meaning it became empty.
يقال: نعوذ بالله من صفر الإناء (1) . يعنون به هلاك المواشي.
It is said: 'We seek refuge in Allah from the emptiness of the pot.' They mean by it the destruction of livestock.
وصفر الطائر يصفر صفيرا، أي مكا.
And a bird whistled, it whistles a whistling sound, meaning it made a sound.
ومننه قولهم: " أجبن من صافر " و " أصفر من بلبل ".

وزعم قوم أن الذى نسبوا إليه هو عبد الله بن الصفار، وأنهم الصفرية بكسر الصاد.
And some claimed that the one they attributed it to was Abdullah ibn as-Saffar, and that they are as-safariyyah (with kasra of the sad).
