ويقال: الدهر: ألا بد.
And it is said: Time means inevitability.
وقولهم: دهرا داهر، كقولهم: أبدا أبيد.
And their saying: 'dahrā dāhira', is like their saying: 'forever and ever'.
وقولهم: دهر دهارير، أي شديد، كقولهم: ليلة ليلاء، ونهار أنهر، ويوم أيوم، وساعة سوعاء.

لا تسبوا الدهر فإن الدهر هو الله
Do not curse time, for time is God.
لأنهم كانوا يضيفون النوازل إليه، فقيل لهم: لا تسبوا فاعل ذلك بكم، فإن ذلك هو الله تعالى.
Because they used to attribute calamities to it (time), so they were told: Do not curse the one who does that to you, for that is God Almighty.
دهر بهم أمر، أي نزل بهم.
