والحصار (1) : وسادة تلقى على البعير ويرفع مؤخرها فيجعل كآخرة الرحل ويحشى مقدمها فيجعل كقادمة الرحل.
And al-ḥiṣār: a pad placed on a camel, its rear part is raised to be like the rear of the saddle, and its front is stuffed to be like the front of the saddle.
تقول منه: احتصرت البعير.
You say from it: I equipped the camel.
والحصر: العي.
And al-ḥaṣr: stammering.
يقال: حصر الرجل يحصر حصرا، مثل تعب تعبا.
It is said: The man stammered, he stammered, a stammering, like he tired, a tiring.
والحصر أيضا: ضيق الصدر.
And al-ḥaṣr also: narrowness of the chest.
يقال حصرت صدروهم، أي ضافت.
It is said their chests were constricted, meaning they became narrow.
جرداء يحصر دونها جرامها (2) - أي تضيق صدروهم من طول هذه النخلة.
bare, its height prevents them from reaching it - meaning their chests are constricted by the height of this palm tree.
وأما قوله تعالى: (أو جاؤكم حصرت صدروهم) *
As for His saying, the Almighty: (Or they come to you with their chests constricted),
فأجاز الاخفش والكوفيون أن يكون الماضي حالا، ولم يجوزه سيبويه إلا مع قد.
Al-Akhfash and the Kufis allowed the past tense to be in the present state, while Sibawayh did not permit it except with 'qad'.
وجعل: (حصرت صدورهم) * على جهة الدعاء عليهم.
And He made: (their chests were constricted) as a form of supplication against them.
وحصر أيضا بمعنى بخل.
And ḥaṣara also means to be stingy.
قال أبو عمرو: يقال: شرب القوم فحصر عليهم فلان، أي بخل.
Abu Amr said: It is said: The people drank, and so-and-so was stingy towards them, meaning he was miserly.
وكل من امتنع من شئ فلم يقدر عليه فقد حصر عنه.
And whoever refrains from something and cannot achieve it, he is prevented from it.
ولهذا قيل: حصر في القراءة، وحصر عن أهله.
And for this reason it is said: he was unable to recite, and he was prevented from his family.
والحصر: الكتوم للسر.
And al-ḥaṣr: the one who conceals secrets.
قال جرير: ولقد تسقطني الوشاة فصادفوا * حصرا بسرك يا أميم ضنينا -
Jarir said: And the informers tried to trip me up, and they found * one who kept your secret, O my mother, precious -
والحصور: الناقة الضيقة الإحليل.
And al-ḥaṣūr: the camel with a constricted teat.
تقول منه: حصرت الناقة بالفتح وأحصرت.
You say from it: the camel's teat was constricted (with fatḥa), and it was constricted.
والحصور: الذي لا يأتي النساء.
And al-ḥaṣūr: he who does not approach women (i.e., impotent).
والحصور: الضيق البخيل، مثل الحصير.
And al-ḥaṣūr: the stingy, the miserly, like al-ḥaṣīr.
قال الاخطل: وشارب مربح بالكأس نادمني * لا بالحصور ولا فيها بسوار -
Al-Ahtal said: And a drinker who offers the cup, keeping me company * neither impotent nor overly extravagant in it -
والحصر بالضم: اعتقال البطن.
And al-ḥaṣr (with damma): constipation.
تقول منه: حصر الرجل وأحصر على ما لم يسم فاعله.
You say from it: the man was constipated, and he was made constipated (passive voice).
قال ابن السكيت: أحصره المرض، إذا منعه من السفر أو من حاجة يريدها.
Ibn al-Sikkit said: Illness prevented him, if it stopped him from traveling or from a need he desired.
قال الله تعالى: (فإن أحصرتم) *
Allah the Almighty said: (But if you are prevented),
قال: وقد حصره العدو يحصرونه، إذا ضيقوا عليه وأحاطوا به.
He said: And the enemy besieged him, they besiege him, if they narrow upon him and surround him.
وحاصروه محاصرة وحصارا.
And they besieged him, a siege and a blockade.
وقال الإخفش: حصرت الرجل فهو محصور، أي حبسته.
And Al-Akhfash said: I confined the man, so he is confined, meaning I imprisoned him.
قال: وأحصرني بولي وأحصرني مرضي، أي جعلني أحصر نفسي.
He said: And my urine prevented me, and my illness prevented me, meaning it made me confine myself.
وقال أبو عمرو الشيباني: حصرني الشئ وأحصرني، أي حبسني.
And Abu Amr al-Shaybani said: Something prevented me and confined me, meaning it imprisoned me.
