And he overwhelmed him, meaning he defeated him.

والبهر بالضم: تتابع النفس.

And 'al-buhr' (with dammah) means the rapid succession of breaths.

ويقال: بهره الحمل يبهره بهرا، أي أوقع عليه البهر فانبهر، أي تتابع نفسه.

And it is said: the burden exhausted the camel, it made its breathing rapid, meaning it caused it to become out of breath, i.e., its breathing became rapid.

وبهرة الليل والوادي والفرس: وسطه.

And the middle of the night, the valley, and the horse: its center.

والأبهر: عرق إذا انقطع مات صاحبه، وهما أبهران يخرجان من القلب ثم يتشعب منهما سائر الشرايين.

And the abhar: a vein, if it is severed, its owner dies; and there are two abhar that emerge from the heart, from which all other arteries branch out.

وللفؤاد وجيب تحت أبهره * لدم الغلام وراء الغيب بالحجر

And the heart trembles beneath its abhar * from the blood of the boy, unseen, by the stone.

والأبهر من القوس: مابين الطائف والكلية.

And the abhar of a bow: what is between the grip and the limb.

والأباهر من ريش الطائر: ما يلي الكلى، أولها القوادم، ثم المناكب، ثم الخوافي، ثم الاباهر، ثم الكلى.

And the abahir of a bird's feathers: those closest to the kidneys, starting with the primaries, then the shoulders, then the coverts, then the abahir, then the tail feathers.

والنسبة إليهم بهرانى مثال بحراني، على غير قياس لان قياسه بهراوى بالواو.

And the attribution to them is 'Bahraani', like 'Bahrani', which is irregular, as the regular form would be 'Bahraawi' with a waw.

والبهار: العرار الذى يقال له عين البقر، وهو بهار البر، وهو نبت جعد له فقاحة صفراء تنبت أيام الربيع، يقال لها العرارة.

And al-bihar: the Arar which is called 'cow's eye', it is the spice of the desert, a curly plant with a yellow flower that grows in spring, called 'Ararah'.

والبهار بالضم: شئ يوزن به، وهو ثلثمائة رطل.

And al-buhaar (with dammah): something by which weight is measured, and it is three hundred pounds.

إن ابن الصعبة - يعنى طلحة بن عبيد الله - ترك مائة بهار، في كل بهار ثلاثة قناطير ذهب

Indeed, Ibn al-Sa'bah - meaning Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah - left behind one hundred 'bihar', and in each 'bihar' were three qintars of gold.

والبهار في كلامهم: ثلثمائة رطل، وأحسبها غير عربية، وأراها قبطية.

And 'al-bihar' in their speech: three hundred pounds, and I consider it non-Arabic, and I think it is Coptic.

وبهر القمر: أضاء حتى غلب ضوءه ضوء الكواكب. يقال: قمر باهر.

And the moon outshone: it illuminated until its light overpowered the light of the stars. It is said: a dazzling moon.

وبهر الرجل: برع.

And a man excelled: he was brilliant.

وقد بهرت فلا تخفى على أحد * إلا على أحد لا يعرف القمرا

And I have surpassed, so I am not hidden from anyone * except from one who does not know the moon.

وقد بهرت فلانة السناء: غلبتهن حسنا.

And so-and-so surpassed the beauties: she outdid them in beauty.

الازواج ثلاثة: زوج بهر، وزوج دهر، وزوج مهر. أي يبهر العيون بحسنه، وأو يعد لنوائب الدهر، أو يؤخذ منه المهر.

Wives are of three types: a wife who dazzles with her beauty, one who is prepared for the vicissitudes of time, or one for whom a dowry is given.

والابتهار: ادعاء الشئ كذبا.

And al-ibtihar: claiming something falsely.

وما بى إن مدحتهم ابتهار

And it is not by me, if I praise them, a false claim.

وابتهر فلان بفلانة: شهر بها.

And so-and-so became famous through so-and-so: he became renowned because of her.

وابهار الليل ابهيرارا، أي انتصف، ويقال ذهب معظمه وأكثره.

And the middle of the night arrived, meaning it reached its midpoint, and it is said its greater part and most of it has passed.

وابهار علينا الليل ابهيرارا: طال.

And the night lengthened upon us, meaning it became long.
