وخطب زياد خطبته البتراء، لأنه لم يحمد الله فيها، ولم يصل على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.

And Ziyad delivered his incomplete sermon, because he did not praise God in it, nor did he send blessings upon the Prophet, peace be upon him.

الأبتران: العبد والعير.

The two abtar (lacking good): the slave and the donkey.

سميا أبترين لقلة خيرهما.

They were named abtarayn (two lacking good) due to their scarcity of good.

وقد أبتره الله: أي صيره أبتر.

ويقال رجل أباتر، بضم الهمزة، للذي يقطع رحمه.

And it is said a man is abāṭir, with a damma on the hamza, for one who severs his kinship ties.
