Ya'qub said: Al-Asma'i does not know it except with a fatha.

والأثر أيضا: مصدر قولك أثرت الحديث، إذا ذكرته عن غيرك.
And al-athar also: the مصدر (verbal noun) of your saying 'athartu al-hadith', if you mention it from someone else.
ومنه قيل: حديث مأثور، أي ينقله خلف عن سلف.
And from this it is said: a transmitted saying, meaning it is passed down from one generation to another.
فما حلفت به ذاكرا ولا آثرا
I did not swear by it, either speaking it or transmitting it.
يقول: لا أقول إن فلانا قال: وأبى لا أفعل كذا وكذا.
He means: I do not say that so-and-so said: 'By my father, I will not do such-and-such.'
والاثر بالضم: أثر الجراح يبقى بعد البرء، وقد يثقل مثل عسر وعسر.
And al-athar (with damma): the mark of wounds that remains after healing, and it can be heavy like 'usr and 'usr.
بيض مفارقها باق بها الاثر (1)
Her parting hair is white, the trace remaining on her.
والاثره أيضا: أن يسحى باطن خف البعير بحديدة ليقتص أثره.
And al-atharah also: to scrape the sole of a camel's hoof with an iron to track its mark.
تقول منه: أثرت البعير فهو مأثور، وتلك الحديدة مئثرة وتؤثور أيضا على تفعول بالضم.
You say from it: 'athartu al-ba'ir fa-huwa ma'thur' (I marked the camel and it is marked), and that iron is mitharah and also tu'aththur (on the pattern of taf'ul with damma).

وتقول أيضا: خرجت في إثره، أي في أثره.
And you also say: 'kharajtu fi ithrihi', meaning in his trace.
والأثر بالتحريك: ما بقي من رسم الشئ وضربة السيف.
And al-athar (with harakat): what remains of the trace of a thing and a sword strike.
وسنن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: آثاره.
And the traditions of the Prophet, peace be upon him: his athar (teachings/traditions).
واستأثر فلان بالشئ، أي استبد به، والاسم الأثرة بالتحريك.

واستأثر الله بفلان، إذا مات ورجي له الغفران.
And Allah took so-and-so exclusively, if he died and forgiveness was hoped for him.
وحكى ابن السكيت: رجل أثر على فعل بضم العين، إذا كان يستأثر على أصحابه، أي يختار لنفسه أفعالا وأخلاقا حسنة.
And Ibn al-Sikkit narrated: a man 'athar' (with damma on the 'ayn), if he monopolizes over his companions, meaning he chooses good deeds and manners for himself.
