وتقول: أنفذت عدة كتب، أي جماعة كتب

Al-Akhfash said, and from this is the saying of Allah the Almighty: (He gathered wealth and counted it).

And al-Ma'dan: the place of the two parts of the saddle-bow.

And Ma'add: the father of the Arabs, and he is Ma'add son of Adnan.

وكان سيبويه يقول: الميم من نفس الكلمة لقولهم تمعدد، لقلة تمفعل في الكلام

And Sibawayh used to say: the 'mim' is from the same word because they say 'tam'addada', due to the rarity of the 'tafa''ala' pattern in speech.

وقد خولف فيه، وهو تمعدد الرجل، أي تزيا بزيهم أو تنسب إليهم، أو تصبر على عيش معد

And he was contradicted in this, and it is 'tam'addada the man', meaning he adopted their guise or was attributed to them, or he endured the life of Ma'add.

قال عمر رضي الله عنه: " اخشو شنوا وتمعددوا "

Omar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Be harsh, be firm, and emulate Ma'add."

قال أبو عبيدة: فيه قولان: يقال هو من الغلظ، ومنه قيل للغلام إذا شب وغلظ: قد تمعدد

Abu Ubaidah said: there are two opinions about it: it is said to be from robustness, and from this it is said to a boy when he grows up and becomes robust: he has become robust.

قال الراجز: ربيته حتى إذا تمعددا

The rajaz poet said: I raised him until he became robust.

ويقال: تمعددوا، أي تشبهوا بعيش معد، وكانوا أهل قشف وغلظ في المعاش

And it is said: they became like Ma'add, meaning they resembled the life of Ma'add, and they were people of austerity and roughness in living.

يقول: فكونوا مثلهم ودعوا التنعم وزى العجم

He says: So be like them and abandon luxury and the attire of foreigners.

قال: وهكذا هو في حديث له آخر: " عليكم باللبسة المعدية "

He said: And thus it is in another hadith of his: "Adhere to the robust attire."

وأما قول معن بن أوس: قفا إنها أمست قفارا ومن بها * وإن كان من ذى ودنا قد تمعددا

As for the saying of Ma'n bin Aws: Stop, for it has become desolate and who is in it * even if it was from someone we loved, he has become distant.

فإنه يريد تباعد

He means becoming distant.

قال الكسائي: وفى المثل: " أن تسمع بالمعيدى خير من أن تراه "

Al-Kisa'i said: And in the proverb: "To hear of al-Mu'aydi is better than to see him."

وهو تصغير معدى منسوب إلى معد، وإنما خففت الدال استثقالا للجمع بين التشديدين مع ياء التصغير

And it is a diminutive of Mu'addi, attributed to Ma'add, and the 'dal' was lightened due to the difficulty of combining two shaddas with the 'ya' of the diminutive.

يضرب للرجل الذى له صيت وذكر في الناس، إذا رأيته ازدريت مرآته

It is said about a man who has fame and renown among people, if you see him, you would despise his appearance.

وقال ابن السكيت: تسمع بالمعيدى لا أن تراه، قال: وكأن تأويله تأويل أمر، كأنه قال: اسمع به ولا تره

And Ibn Al-Sukkit said: You hear of al-Mu'aydi, not see him, he said: And its interpretation is like the interpretation of a matter, as if he said: Hear of it and do not see it.

والعد بالكسر: الماء الذي له مادة لا تنقطع، كماء العين والبئر، والجمع الأعداد

And al-'add (with kasra): water that has an unending source, like spring water and well water, and the plural is al-a'dad.

قال الشاعر: ديمومة ما بها عد ولا ثمد

The poet said: A vast desert with no flowing water nor stagnant water.

والعد أيضا: الكثرة

And al-'add also: abundance.

يقال: إنهم لذوو - عد وقبص

It is said: Indeed, they are possessors of abundance and gathering.

والعداد: اهتياج وجع اللديغ، وذلك إذا تمت له سنة منذ يوم لدغ اهتاج به الألم

And al-'idad: the recurrence of the pain of the stung person, which happens when a year has passed since the day of the sting, and the pain flares up.

والعدد مقصور منه

And al-'adad (shortened) is from it.

وقد جاء ذلك في ضرورة الشعر

And this has occurred in poetic license.

يقال: عادته اللسعة، إذا أتته لعداد

It is said: the sting afflicted him, if it came to him for recurrence.

وفى الحديث: "مازالت أكلة خيبر تعادني، فهذا أوان قطعت أبهرى"

And in the hadith: "The bite from Khaybar has been recurring on me, and this is the time when it cut my aorta."

وقال الشاعر: ألافى من تذكر آل ليلى * كما يلقى السليم من العداد

The poet said: Do I forget the remembrance of the family of Layla * as the stung person experiences the recurrence of pain.

ولقيت فلانا عداد الثريا، أي مرة في في الشهر

And I met so-and-so 'عداد al-Thurayya', meaning once in the month.

وذلك أن القمر ينزل الثريافى كل شهر مرة

And that is because the moon passes through the Pleiades once every month.

ويوم الغداد: يوم العطاء

And Yawm al-Ghadad: the day of giving.

قال الشاعر عتبة بن الوعل: وقائلة يوم العداد لبعلها * أرى عتبة بن الوعل بعدي تغيرا

The poet Utbah bin Al-Wa'l said: And a woman saying on the day of giving to her husband * I see Utbah bin Al-Wa'l has changed after me.

ويقال: بالرجل عداد، أي مس من جنون

And it is said: the man has 'adad, meaning a touch of madness.

وفلان في عداد أهل الخير، أي يعد معهم

And so-and-so is among the good people, meaning he is counted with them.

وعداد القوس: رنينها، وهو صوت الوتر

And the 'idad of the bow: its hum, which is the sound of the string.

وفلان عداده في بني فلان، إذا كان ديوانه معهم، أي يعد منهم في الديوان

And so-and-so's 'adad is with the Banu so-and-so, if his register is with them, meaning he is counted among them in the register.

وقولهم: كان ذلك على عدان فلان، وعدان فلان، أي على عهده وزمانه

And their saying: That was during the 'adana of so-and-so, and the 'adana of so-and-so, meaning during his era and his time.

قال الفرزدق: ككسرى على عدانه أو كقيصرا

Al-Farazdaq said: Like Khosrau in his era or like Caesar.
