You say: I defined the house, its limit is a boundary.
وفلان حديد فلان: إذا كان أرضه إلى جنب أرضه.
And so-and-so is the neighbor of so-and-so: if his land is next to his land.
والحد: المنع، ومنه قيل للبواب: حداد.
And al-ḥadd: prevention, and from this the doorkeeper is called ḥaddād.
فقمنا ولما يصح ديكنا * إلى جونة عند حدادها
So we got up, and our rooster had not yet crowed * to the water-skin at its boundary.
ويقال للسجان حداد، لأنه يمنع من الخروج، أو لانه يعالج الحديد من القيود.
And the jailer is called ḥaddād, because he prevents exit, or because he works iron for the chains.
يقول لي الحداد وهو يقودني * إلى السجن لا تجزع فما بك من باس
The jailer says to me as he leads me * to prison, 'Do not despair, for there is no harm in you.'
والمحدود: الممنوع من البخت وغيره.
And al-maḥdūd: one prevented from good fortune and other things.
وهذا أمر حدد: أي منيع حرام لا يحل ارتكابه.
And this is a forbidden matter: meaning, protected, forbidden, not permissible to commit.
ودعوة حدد: أي باطلة.
And a دعوة (دعوة) of ḥadad: meaning, false.
ودونه حدد: أي منع.
And beyond it is ḥadad: meaning, prevention.
فإن دعيتم فقولوا دونه حدد
And if you are called (to worship another), say: beyond Him is prevention.
ومالي عن هذا الأمر حدد: أي بد.
And I have no means for this matter: meaning, an alternative.
حدد أن يكون سيبك فينا * زرما أو يجيئنا تمصيرا
It is forbidden for your gift to be among us * a flowing stream, or to come to us as a curse.
قد حد الله ذاك عنا.
Allah has forbidden that from us.
وحددت الرجل: أقمت عليه الحد، لأنه يمنعه من المعاودة.
And I punished the man: I imposed the legal punishment on him, because it prevents him from repeating the offense.
وأحدت المرأة: أي امتنعت من الزينة والخضاب بعد وفاة زوجها.
And the woman abstained (أحدت): meaning, she refrained from adornment and dyeing after her husband's death.
والمحادة: المخالفة، ومنع ما يجب عليك.
And al-muḥāddah: opposition, and withholding what is due to you.
والحديد معروف، لأنه منيع.
And iron is known, because it is strong/resistant.
والحديدة أخص منه، والجمع الحدائد، وقد جاء في الشعر الحدائدات.
And al-ḥadīdah is more specific than it, and the plural is al-ḥadā'id, and in poetry al-ḥadā'idāt has come.
فهن يعلكن حدائداتها
So they chew their iron bits.
وحد كل شئ: شباته.
And the limit of everything: its prime/peak.
وحد الرجل: بأسه
And the might of a man: his strength.
وحد الشراب: صلابته.
And the potency of a drink: its strength.
وكأس كعين الديك باكرت حدها * بفتيان صدق والنواقيس تضرب
And a cup like the rooster's eye, I approached its limit * with truthful youths while the bells were ringing.
وقد حد السيف يحد حدة، أي صار حادا وحديدا، وسيوف حداد، وألسنة حداد.
And the sword became sharp, it sharpens with sharpness, meaning it became sharp and made of iron, and sharp swords, and sharp tongues.
والحداد أيضا: ثياب المأتم السود.
And al-ḥiddād also: black mourning clothes.
سيف حداد بالضم والتشديد مثل أمر كبار.
A sword of ḥiddād (with damma and shadda), like 'amr kibār.
والحدة: ما يعتري الإنسان من النزق والغضب.
And al-ḥiddah: what befalls a person of irritability and anger.
حددت على الرجل أحد حدة وحدا، عن الكسائي.
I became angry with the man, I became angry with anger and a temper, from Al-Kisa'i.
وتحديد الشفرة وإحدادها واستحدادها، بمعنى.
And sharpening the blade, and its sharpening, and its sharpening, all mean the same.
والاستحداد أيضا: حلق شعر العانة.
And al-istiḥdād also: shaving the pubic hair.
أحددت النظر إلى فلان.
I fixed my gaze upon so-and-so.
واحتد فلان من الغضب محتد.
