The livestock were fed salt-rich plants; you fed them the salty ground, which is when you cannot find sour fodder and feed them this instead.
ملح الماء يملح ملوحا، وكذلك ملح بالضم ملوحة، فهو ماء ملح، ولا يقال مالح إلا في لغة ردية
Water becomes salty, it tastes salty, and likewise it becomes salty with saltiness; it is salty water. And 'māliḥ' is only said in a poor dialect.
وأملحت الإبل: وردت ماء ملحا
And the camels drank salty water: they arrived at salty water.
