Al-Asma'i, from Abu Amr ibn al-Ala, said: I heard an Arab saying: So-and-so is foolish (laghūb); my letter came to him and he belittled it.
فقلت: أتقول جاءته كتابي؟ فقال: أليس بصحيفة؟
I said: Do you say 'my letter came to him'? He replied: Is it not a document?
فقلت: ما اللغوب؟ فقال: الأحمق.
I said: What is al-lughūb? He replied: The foolish one.
واللغب أيضا: الريش الفاسد مثل البطنان منه.
And al-laghab also: corrupted feathers, like the large flight feathers of a bird.
واللغاب بالضم مثله، وهو خلاف اللؤام.
And al-laghāb (with damma) is similar, and it is the opposite of nobility (al-lu'ām).
وما ولدت أمي من القوم عاجزا * ولا كان ريشي من ذنابى ولا لغب

وقد حركه الكميت في قوله: لا نقل ريشها ولا لغب * مثل نهر ونهر، لاجل حرف الحلق وريش لغيب.
And Al-Kumait vocalized it in his verse: Neither its feathers are moved nor are they inferior (laghib) * like a river and a river, for the sake of a throat letter and inferior feathers (laghīb).
قال الراجز في الذئب: أشعرته مذلقا مذروبا * ريش بريش لم يكن لغيبا
The rajaz poet said about the wolf: I made it feel sharp and pointed * feather by feather, it was not inferior (laghīb).
الأموي: لغبت على القوم ألغب، بالفتح فيهما، لغبا: أفسدت عليهم.
Al-Umayyi said: I spoiled things for the people (laghabtu 'ala al-qawm alghab), with the fath in both, lughaban: I corrupted them.
والتلغب: طول الطرد.
And al-talaghghub: a long pursuit.
تلغبني دهر فلما غلبته غزاني بأولادي فأدركني الدهر
Time pursued me for a long time (talaghghabani dahr), and when I overcame it, it attacked me with my offspring, and time overtook me.
