والضب: داء في الشفة يسيل دما، ومنه قولهم: جاء فلان تضب لثاته بالكسر، إذا اشتد حرصه على الشئ.
And 'al-dhabbu' is a disease of the lip that bleeds; and from it is their saying: 'So-and-so came with his gums bleeding' (tadhibbu lathatuhu with kasra), when his eagerness for something intensified.
قال بشر بن أبي خازم: وبنى تميم (1) قد لقينا منهم * خيلا تضب لثاتها للمغنم
Bishr bin Abi Khazim said: And the Banu Tamim, we encountered from them * cavalry whose gums were bleeding for spoils.
قال أبو عبيدة: هو قلب تبض، أي تسيل وتقطر.
Abu Ubaydah said: It is a heart that pulses, meaning it flows and drips.
والضب: انفتاق من الابط وكثرة من اللحم.
And 'al-dhabbu' is a rupture from the armpit and an abundance of flesh.
تقول: تضبب الصبي، أي سمن وانفتقت آباطه وقصر عنقه.
You say: 'The child became plump' (tadabbaba al-sabiyy), meaning he grew fat, his armpits burst open, and his neck shortened.
ورجل ضباضب بالضم، إذا كان قصيرا سمينا.
And a man 'dhabdhabu' (with damma), if he is short and fat.
والضبيبة: سمن ورب يجعل للصبي في عكة يطعمه، يقال: ضببوا لصبيكم.
And 'al-dhabeeba' is ghee and syrup made for a child in a pot to feed him; it is said: 'Feed your child' (dabbibu li-sabiyyikum).
