والحسب أيضا: ما يعده الإنسان من مفاخر آبائه.
And al-ḥasabu also: what a person counts from the glories of his ancestors.
والرجل حسيب، وقد حسب بالضم حسابة، مثل خطب خطابة.
And a man is ḥasīb, and he has become ḥasaba (with dammah) ḥisābah, like khaṭaba khaṭābah.
وحاسبته من المحاسبة واحتسبت عليه كذا، إذا أنكرته عليه.
And I held him accountable from al-muḥāsabah, and I counted against him such-and-such, if I denied it to him.
واحتسبت بكذا أجرا عند الله، والاسم الحسبة بالكسر وهي الأجر والجمع الحسب.
And I sought reward for such-and-such from God, and the noun is al-ḥisbah (with kasrah), which is the reward, and its plural is al-ḥasab.
وفلان محتسب البلد، ولا تقل محسب.
And so-and-so is the muḥtasib of the town, and do not say muḥsib.
واحتسب فلان ابنا له أو بنتا، إذا ما مات وهو كبير، فإن مات صغيرا قيل افترطه.
And so-and-so lost a son or daughter (iḥtasaba), if he died when he was grown; if he died young, it is said iftaraṭahu.
ويقال أيضا إنه لحسن الحسبة في الأمر، إذا كان حسن التدبير له.
And it is also said that he is good at al-ḥisbah in the matter, if he is good at managing it.
وأحسبنى الشئ، أي كفانى.
And a thing made me aḥsub, meaning it sufficed me.
وأحسبته وحسبته بالتشديد بمعنى، أي أعطيته ما يرضيه.
And I made him aḥsub and I ḥassabtu (with shaddah) meaning the same, i.e., I gave him what would satisfy him.
ونقفي وليد الحي إن كان جائعا * ونحسبه إن كان ليس بجائع
And we give the young of the tribe sustenance if he is hungry, and we give him enough if he is not hungry.
وحسبك درهم أي كفاك، وهو اسم.
And ḥasbuka dirham, meaning it is enough for you, and it is a noun.
وشئ حساب، أي كافيا.
And a thing is ḥisāb, meaning sufficient.
وقوله تعالى: (عطاء حسابا)، أي كافيا.
And His saying, the Almighty: (a gift sufficient), meaning adequate.
وهذا رجل حسبك من رجل، وهو مدح للنكرة لأن، فيه تأويل فعل كأنه قال محسب لك، أي كاف لك من غيره، يستوي فيه الواحد والجمع والتثنية، لانه مصدر.
And this is a man, ḥasbuka min rajul, and it is praise for an indefinite noun because it has the interpretation of a verb, as if it said muḥsib laka, meaning sufficient for you from others; it is the same for singular, plural, and dual, because it is a masdar.
والحسبان بالضم: العذاب.
And al-ḥusbān (with dammah): torment.
أصاب الأرض حسبان، أي جراد.
Locusts afflicted the land, meaning locusts.
والحسبان: الحساب، قال الله تعالى: (الشمس والقمر بحسبان).
And al-ḥusbān: calculation, and God the Almighty said: (The sun and the moon are by calculation).
والحسبان أيضا: سهام قصار، الواحدة حسبانة.
And al-ḥusbān also: short arrows, the singular is ḥusbānah.
والحسبانة أيضا: الوسادة الصغيرة، تقول منه حسبته، إذا وسدته.
And al-ḥusbānah also: a small pillow; you say from it ḥassabtuhu, if you pillow it.
لتقيت بالوجعاء طعنة مرهف * حران أو لثويت غير محسب
You met with the spear a sharp thrust, burning, or you would have lain down unpillowed.
وتحسبت الخبر. أي استخبرت.
And you inquired about the news (taḥassabta). Meaning you sought information.
تشمم الأسد ناقتي وظن أنني * بها مفتد من واحد لا أغامره
The lion sniffed my she-camel and thought that I would leave her to him, and not fight him.
والأحسب من الإبل، هو الذي فيه بياض وحمرة.
And al-aḥsab of camels is that which has whiteness and redness.
والاحسب من الناس: الذي في شعر رأسه شقرة.
And al-aḥsab among people: he whose hair on his head has a reddish tinge.
أيا هند لا تنكحي بوهة * عليه عقيقته أحسبا
O Hind, do not marry a man whose forelock is reddish-white.
وحسبته صالحا أحسبه بالفتح، محسبة ومحسبة وحسبانا بالكسر، أي ظننته.
And I thought him righteous, I aḥsubuhu (with fatḥah), maḥsabah, and maḥsabah, and ḥusbānan (with kasrah), meaning I supposed him.
قالوا: حسب يحسب ويحسب، وبئس يبأس ويبئس، ويئس ييأس وييئس، ونعم ينعم وينعم، فإنها جاءت من السالم بالكسر والفتح.
They said: ḥasiba yaḥsubu and yaḥsubu, and bi'sa yab'asu and yab'asu, and ya'isa yay'asu and yay'asu, and na'ama yun'imu and yun'imu, for they came from sound verbs with kasrah and fatḥah.
