And you say, 'This is a man of evil' (by annexation).
ثم تدخل عليه الألف واللام، فتقول: هذا رجل السوء
Then you add the definite article, and say: 'This is the man of evil'.
وكنت كذئب السوء لما رأى دما * بصاحبه يوما أحال على الدم
And I was like the wolf of evil when it saw blood * on its companion one day, it turned to the blood.
ولا يقال: هذا رجل السوء بالضم.
And it is not said: 'This is the man of evil' (with ḍamma).
وأساء إليه: نقيض أحسن إليه.
And 'asa'a ilayhi: the opposite of 'aḥsana ilayhi' (to treat him well).
والسوآى نقيض الحسنى
And as-suwā is the opposite of al-ḥusnā (the best).
وفي القرآن: (ثم كان عاقبة الذين أساؤا السوآى)
And in the Qur'an: (Then the consequence of those who did evil was evil).
والسيئة أصلها سيوئة، فقلبت الواو ياء وأدغمت.
And as-sayyi'ah, its origin is sayyi'ah, so the wāw was changed to yā' and assimilated.
ويقال: فلان سيئ الاختيار، وقد يخفف، مثل: هين، وهين، ولين ولين.
And it is said: 'So-and-so is bad in choice', and it may be lightened, like: hayyin, and hayyin, and layyin, and layyin.
ولا يجزون من حسن بسئ * ولا يجزون ms0057 من غلظ بلين
And they are not rewarded for good with badness * And they are not rewarded for harshness with gentleness.
وامرأة سوآء: قبيحة.
And a woman is sawā': ugly.
ويقال: له عندي ما ساءه وناءه، وما يسوءه وينوءه.
And it is said: 'He has from me what displeased him and afflicted him, and what displeases him and afflicts him'.
ابن السكيت: سؤت به ظنا، وأسأت به الظن.
Ibn as-Sikkit: 'Sa'tu bihi ẓannan' (I formed a bad opinion of him), and 'asa'tu bihi aẓ-ẓanna (I formed a bad opinion of him).
يثبتون الالف إذا جاءوا بالالف واللام.
They keep the alif when they bring the definite article.
وقولهم ما أنكرك من سوء، أي لم يكن إنكاري إياك من سوء رأيته بك، إنما هو لقلة المعرفة بك.
And their saying 'Mā ankaruka min sū'' (What makes you unknown to me is not from badness), meaning: my not recognizing you is not due to any badness I saw in you, but rather due to my lack of knowledge of you.
وقيل في قوله تعالى: (تخرج بيضاء من غير سوء)
And it was said regarding the Almighty's saying: (It comes out white, without any defect).
أي من غير برص.
Meaning, without leprosy.
والسوأة: العورة، والفاحشة.
And as-su'ah: the private part, and indecency.
والسوأة السوآء: الخلة القبيحة.
And as-su'ah as-suwā': the ugly trait.
وسوأت عليه ما صنع تسوئة وتسويئا، إذا عبته عليه، وقلت له: أسأت.
And 'sawwa'ta 'alayhi mā ṣana'a taswī'atan wa taswī'an, if you criticized him for what he did, and told him: 'You have done badly'.
يقال: إن أسأت فسوئ علي.
It is said: 'If I have done badly, then let it be bad for me'.
وسؤت الرجل سواية ومساية، مخففان، أي ساءه ما رآه مني
And 'sa'tu ar-rajula sawāyatan wa masāyatan, lightened, meaning: what he saw from me displeased him.
والذين قالوا: سواية حذفوا الهمزة، وأصله الهمز.
And those who said: sawāyah, omitted the hamzah, and its origin is hamz.
والذين قالوا: مساية حذفوا الهمزة تخفيفا.
And those who said: masāyah, omitted the hamzah for lightness.
وقولهم: " الخيل تجري علي مساويها "
And their saying: 'The horses run despite their faults'.
أي إنها وإن كانت بها أو صاب وعيوب، فإن كرمها يحملها على الجري.
Meaning, even if they have ailments and defects, their nobility compels them to run.
وتقول من السوء، استاء الرجل، مثل استاع، كما تقول من الغم: اغتم.
And you say from as-sū': 'istā'a ar-rajulu' (the man was displeased), like 'istā'a', just as you say from al-ghamm (grief): 'ightamma' (he was grieved).
